Opinion: I have been using this cam for two years and its my first digicam. I am very satisfied with its colour reproduction which is just nice to my eyes out of the camera. So I don't do much post processing. At the time of purchase I was considering the Fuji S3800 but bought this cam instead becuase it has a more powerful falsh and has better construction compared to the Fuji. I might be keeping this camera until it lifespan comes to an end. Its a great camera but has a great learning curve and is very fun to use if you like to adventure through its sea of features. On the other hand, the AUTO mode is 100% fuss free point & shoot. If u give me a choice two years ago, I would still buy this cam becoz of its features and the price was unbeatable at the time of purchase.

Problems: There are a lot of drawbacks that have been sorted out by Olympus in the future models. Except for two which is the AF assist and also the vulnerability of dust to enter the lens. You have to get a lens tube and put on a UV filter to protect the lens. This of course makes the cam less compact but looks more profesional, at least for me. Other than that, picture quality on this cam is also average as opposed to the rest of the 3 MP batch but this has been sorted out by Olympus. This is because of the CCD size I think. Because of noise problems, we are bound to use only ISO 100 and ISO 64 is not in the menu but there is a way to get the camera software to select ISO 64. Chromatic Abberration or purple fringing is also a major concern with this cam since it does not have an Extra Dispersion lens like the C-740,C-750, C-760, C-765, and C-770.

Opinion: An OK camera for the money, this SLR achieves a resonable compromise on features and is appropriate for moderate spenders or new digital users. I've had this camera for a year now, and am still mostly satisfied. But I will definitely upgrade to a better level in the future as the problems (see below) can be irritating.

The 10x zoom is very effective in bright light. You will be hard pressed to find similar zooms for the money. This is really the only reason someone should buy an Olympus 7xx Camedia.

The size is smaller than a regular SLR, but this is (I feel) an advantage.

In summary, a good family/novice camera for use on vacations or events. Stay away if you need high speed or dim light capability.

Problems: The zoom lens has a cheap "loose" feel construction, but it doesn't seem to impare the function.

It has a slow shooting/focusing speed. The camera functioned poorly at both a recent graduation and wedding because of this - I just couldn't get it to take the picture before the subject moved out of the frame.

It eats batteries, but this may be unavoidable as zooming takes a lot of power. But the 4 AA capability is nice because you can substitute store-bought on the fly if you really need it.

The camera has a hard time in dim lighting, even with a flash. Photos occasionally exhibit a lot of noise by comparison with some newer cameras.

Some reviewers have remarked that the flash is weak, but I actually thought it washed out faces, and I routinely turn the flash power down for indoor shooting.

You should seriously consider using a tripod for anything other than bright daytime shots. Low light far zoom shots will almost certainly be fuzzy.

Opinion: I have been searching for adigital substitute for my SLR (Olympus) and this is the first camera that came anywhere near fulfilling that role.

Opinion: I am a novice, having started out with a really cheap digital camera and had so much fun I jumped up to this model after reading reviews . I wanted the most zoom I good afford and this was the one.I have had so much pleasure from this camera in the last 8 months that I had to write here because of the negative reviews I've seen here. A picture is worth a 1000 words..check my web site
http://members.shaw.ca/teddytsplace... Wallpaper and Screensaver pictures on site taken with the C-730 UZ "LEARN HOW TO USE IT PROPERLY"

Problems: like most I really wish it had full strap like the newer model

Opinion: Nice camera, but the bad performance with regards to purple fringing held me back a little. I got it a lot with bird shots (bird in a tree, branches against the bright sky -> lots of fringing). Even with the sun behind me and blue skies I could often still find some purple in those type shots. Very frustrating. I think today you'd be much better off with the c740uz or the c750uz, which have much less of a fringing problem, and which I feel are the top big zoom cameras. That said, the 730 did a real good job during my vacation. I guess holiday snaps are less of a challenge than birdshots. I did use full zoom a couple of times, but no pics from those 2 weeks had bad fringing. Check some of 'm out at

userid witbier/hoegaarden
(the ones starting with P8 are taken with the 730. No postprocessing except for downsizing from interpolated mode)

Pros:
- evf a joy to use compared to the optical viewfinder on my c3000
- ditto for the quick access menu options, customizable button and mymodes
- still takes the sm-cards I have (next to xd)

Problems: The cons:
- purple fringing (see http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4288151835)
- not so great or fast at focusing
- iso64 not user selectable (only available through some of the creative modes)

Opinion: My C730UZ's Photos:
http://www.pbase.com/jeffcat

More China C730UZ Users' photos:
http://digi.pchome.net/2003/5/18/3_45327.htm

The Factory Setting for C730UZ make the photos a little bit RED. I think we should adjust the White Balance to Blue(only 1 step).

You can also control C730UZ via a computer USB port:

(in Chinese, with screen shot, the original software is from http://www.pinetreecomputing.com/camctl.asp)

Problems: none

Opinion: I went from a C-3000 to this camera and I'm very happy with it's overall performance. I made the move for the 10x zoom and it's amazing for such a small unit. I would have preferred a comprehensive printed manual to the software edition, and a standard strap setup.
You have to try other cameras to appreciate the features of this camera. The menus are very intuitive, given some time with the manual.
I like having both the X-d and Smartmedia card availability, that's why I didn't go to the C-750.

Problems: No problems, so far.
I ordered this camera online and it's a CE version(European) with a US warranty(registered). I really don't understand the difference!

Opinion: Having owned a Olympus D490, really like the quality and built, I thought I would stick with Olympus line. However, I was very disappointed with this "upgrade". The lens has a loose feel, although it does not affect the picture, it feels cheaply made. The focus is a tad slow during the day, but night time is poor, resulting with high noise shots over and over again. The 10x zoom is the very good, though.
I like the idea of using both smartmedia and xD, since I have a invested in Smartmedia already.
I really wanted to like this camera, even with some of the flaws. But after close to a month of use, I found one fairly largestuck pixel, and a few hot pixelx, that resulted in a return to my vendor, and I ordered a Minolta 7Hi instead.
If you are looking at a camera, do this:
- Read user reviews,
- Read reviews here, and other review sites,
- Get to "touch" one, and get to know how it feels in your hands - 730 is a little small for me, but D490 feels natural for me, even though physically, it is smaller, but the weight is more balanced.
- Know what you want to do with it, larger cameras are pain in the neck to carry around for snap shot situations, but extra features may not be available in smaller cameras.

what I liked:
- 10x zoom, WOW - 38-380 mm, is simply, awesome.
- Very nice Macro performance, without any additional add-ons.
- use of smartmedia.
- Movie with sound.
- Good battery life.

Problems: - Stuck pixel, hot pixel.
- poort night shot
- Loose feeling lens. I see other people reporting this, so maybe this is a feature?

Personal preferences:
- A little too small for my hands - although it's a perfect fit for my wife.
- lack of neck strap (only a single / side strap)
