Opinion: I lend this camera from a friend to compare it with my Canon A700. In the beginning i thought this can't be fair but the Olympus nearly blew my mind! The picture quality is amazing for a camera that aged! I love the macro capabilities of the Canon A700 and the Olympus isn't any badder in this discipline. It offers a (well hided in the menu ;-) super macro mode. Great camera with many manual controls. If you have one keep it!

Problems: The battery life from 4 1700 NiMH's isn't that long, focus in low light and camera operation in general is slow.

Opinion: Upgraded to Panasonic FZ7
It was really good camera for almost all kinds of use…
Lot of manual features and good automatic mode.
My doter learning now with this camera.
For somebody want a some camera to start with it - it is a good choice.

Problems: SmartMedia card - 128 Mb max size.
Sometimes long delay between push and shot.
Zoom X3 , many focus misses in indoor photos.

Opinion: I used this camera for 3 years before I upgraded to the Fuji s9000. This is a good P&S camera and if you find it cheap enough is a good alternative to the new under $200 4mp P&S cameras available. This camera has excellent macro capabilities. My work camera is a new Canon Powershot A520 and quite frankly, the Olympus is superior in every way despite being over 3 years old. The smart media card it uses is obsolete however.

Problems: Slow start up times
Shot to shot times are slow
Some shutter lag

Opinion: I decided to give Olympus a chance and this camera really impressed me so much that I dumped my last Sony camera all together. You can visit my deviantart.com account if you'd like to see just why I decided to stick with this camera for awhile. Soon I'll be updating to an Olympus SLR digital.

Problems: The flash refresh is a bit slow but that's why you have the external flash option...;)

Opinion: This camera rekindled my interest in photography.
It has proven itself (in my experience) by the excellent lens (F2.8 through entire zoom range), flexible photographic controls, ergonomic construction, outstanding image quality for 4 mp class.

Problems: Wish it had a more contemporary storage medium than SM card

Opinion: For some of you worried about forgetting to remove the lens cap when turning this cam on you can purchase a tube adaptor for 52mm lens or filters and keep it on the camera all the time. All you need is a lens cap for a 52 mm filter. I bought one and added a UV filter and a lens cap for it and now I don't have to worry about the lens trying to grind through the original lens cover.

This is a great little camera. The quality of the images are very very good and show very good resolution when enlarged to 10 x 8's. I have had it for 3 years and no problems.

Opinion: Bought this after having 2 Fuji P&S digital stuff; this has got pretty much everything you want. If you can find/afford the C4040Z get that.
Fighting your way through the menus can be tortuous, but that's the same for any digital camera I've looked at. (Wife has Ixus 430). The point is that you can do what you did with your analog camera, but it does take longer. One review here states that your pleasure with the unit is a function of your familiarity/experience with it...... I'd concur with that.
Will I trade this in for something else? Not yet.......it's a good camera.

Problems: I have less reservations than many other postings here.

Opinion: Still great after 3 years!
I purchased this camera when it first came out (nearly 3 years ago) and I have to say even based on todays cameras it gives phenominal quality shots that i'm truly happy with even today.

If someones selling this camera used for a good price dont hesitate to pick it up... just make sure you can find the now extinct smartmedia memory cards.

I'm in the market for a superzoom now(one of the things the 4000 lacks) but i will definately still be using it.

Problems: As some people stated the worst things i've been able to pinpoint with this camera are its AF speed (it can really search sometimes in certain lights) and zoom (even though its a 3x, it maxes at 96mm, doesnt get you very far at all)
but this goes against what a great macro camera this is. honestly because of the silly menu's it was nearly a year till i found the S-macro mode, but boy once i did was i surprised.

Opinion: I did alot of research before purchasing this camera and I have not been dissapointed. Have owned it for nearly one year now and I have taken thousands of pictures in all types of conditions and I always get very good quality images which for me is the most important thing. The camera maybe a bit on the bulky side but it is well made, loaded with features and excellent value for money.

Problems: Only forgetting to remove the lens cap.
