Opinion: I am a user from Germany, so please excuse my bad english. I got my 3040Z only two days ago. Before, I used a Olympus 830L for 18 months or so, but I would rather compare the 3040Z with my "classic" cameras. I really enjoy the features of the camera, wich are quite the same with all professional cameras. You can do all settings by hand, including the white balance. This and the bright 1:1,8 Lens are the Features why I decided for the Olympus. Dark Pictures (exposure above one second) show a little noise, but are acceptable (I can not compare this to other digital cameras, except my 830L - and this one is very bad in low light). The lens is bright, but barrells a bit in wide angle. I don't mind that effect, because it vanishes when zooming a little. You can achieve interesting effects when combining it with depth-of-field . All Pictures taken so far have an astonishing sharpness.
Problems: You can't use any external flashes except the FL-40 from Olympus. And this one will only work if you buy a grip and a cord. In total it costs another $600 (at least in Germany). So I don't use a external flash :) I will test my existing flash with a slave module, but this is not satisfying, because you still have to use the internal flash.
Opinion: I've shot two batch of pictures using my newly arrived 3040z and all I can say is this is perhaps the best "point and shoot" digital camera I have seen or used.
The AF is fast and very reliable. The 1.8 lens is unbelievable in low light situations and generates sharp, clear, noise free pictures.
For anyone looking for an easy to use, flexible, compact digital camera, the Olympus 3040z can't be beat.
I looked closely at all the under $ 1000 cameras available and decided to wait for the 3040z. I can't be happier with my patience.
Problems: The camera "feels" too light to be a highly technical digital camera. Time will tell how well it holds up to the usual bumps and bruises of an "almost" pocket digital.
Opinion: What a excellent little digital Olympus have come up with!
The metering and saturation are great. The images are crisp and clean. Period, as you say in the States
The functions are everything you'd want to have-but no more- its got all the quality features from both the digital and SLR world- from manual white balance setting to selectable area focus. There's plenty of ways to tweak your images if you want to get creative on the spot.
Also, Olympus seems have worked out the buttons vs. menu function split very logically. As far as I can tell, all the functions which should be on the body, are on the body.
The build quality and ergonomics are excellent. It's small enough to fit in most pockets and it's reasonably light. Even so, the metal body gives it a lovely solidity in your hand.
All in all, a very high quality camera. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Problems: None so far, none predicted either. This camera is looking like a winner to me.
Just do NOT forget to take the lens cap off at start up. I guarantee that will NOT like sound it makes if you do.
Opinion: I have tried them all and this camera gives me my best bang for the bucks! The images are super clear and the images provide the best color. I have always been a canon fan but the olympus 3040 outshines the g1 in my opion.
