Opinion: This was my first digital camera. I choosed to buy this model after reading any reviews available at that time on Internet. Now I can make some user review about it. The camera itself is a good bargain, if found at discounts. It's a pretty simple camera, which provides good quality images if used in places with a lot of sunlight. If used in shadows or anyways in low light, the contrast and looks of the picture drastically lowers (but this is valid for any camera). The 1600x1200 pixel mode (2.1 Mpix) is enough for photo prints and for displaying on the computer.

Problems: Unfortunatelly I have encountered problems with this camera. First of all, the display went black&white and this couldn't be fixed at the Olympus dealer in my area. Then, the sliding door covering the lens, which also turns on and off the camera, got used and now if you slightly push the cover than the camera shuts down - very annoying. More recently, the LCD gone totally blank .. it does not display anything anymore.

Opinion: This camera was my introduction to digital photography. At first I only used it sparingly, but as I started using it more, and learned to adjust the white balance and exposure compensation manually, I started getting really great photos with it.

The 2.1mp ccd is limiting in terms of print, but for web photography, it's just fine.

I'm looking to move up to the next level now, an slr-like digi-cam, but what I've leared about digital photography from this great little camera is invaluable.

Check out my photogallery. All images taken with the D-510 Zoom.

Problems: The flash is next to useless. I never got a good picture with it. Indoor photography was also a challenge, although the white balance adjustments do help. Used outdoors and with available light (no flash) yielded excellent results.

Opinion: Very rugged little camera, great intro to digital photography, great in low light compared to film cameras. I've taken over 10,000 shots with this thing in the past nine months, and it's held up well. Still experimenting with the settings; I'm doing more manual overrides than I used to, and am playing with resolution and image quality settings, too. This thing gives you a lot of growing room if you're new to digicams. I carry it around with me pretty much wherever I go at this point.

Lens is good, with good image accuracy. Color could be a little more accurate, but I'm working on honing the settings more effectively. I'd like more shutter/aperture control; maybe in my next digicam.

Some of the shots I've taken are at http://beauty.nagog.smasher.net:81/gallery/.

Problems: The clamshell lens cover/power switch beginning to wear out; powers off too easily. Focusing in low light is sometimes a problem; a focus lamp (like those on the Canon Elphs) would help. I like the clambshell lens design, but it makes power-up to first shot a little long. Button labels on the back panel are starting to wear off, but I know what they do by now. Some of the more useful settings (like metering, white balance and exposure compensation) are buried in the menus.

Camedia software is only average, and I only use it to stitch panoramas together. All other processing is done in Photoshop and Irfanview.

Opinion: I HAVE REVIEWED 5 DIGITAL CAMERAS IN THE PAST YEAR- TOSHIBA 25 , NIKON 950 , KODAK 3900 , OLYMPUS 3000 , AND THE OLYMPUS D- 510. THE 510 HAS PRODUCED THE SHARPEST IMAGES OF THE FIVE. ONE EXCEPTION: THE NIKON 950 WHICH PRODUCED THE FINEST MACRO SHOTS. THE 510 IS NOT THE MOST USER FRIENDLY- I CONSIDER IT A WORKHORSE WITH LITTLE AESTHETIC APPEAL BUT GOOD FOR THE DOLLAR. THE KODAK PRODUCED THE BEST COLOR- A BIT SATURATED BUT PRETTY, SHARPNESS IS GOOD BUT NOT THE BEST.THE KODAKS ARE VERY EASY TO USE HOWEVER. AVOID THE TOSHIBA WHICH PRODUCED UNDEREXPOSED FLASH SHOTS AND PURPLE FRINGE IN SUNLIGHT. DESPITE EXCELLENT REVIEWS, MY OLYMPUS 3000 PRODUCED GOOD BUT UNIMPRESSIVE SHOTS. PERHAPS IT WAS JUST THIS CAMERA. ............GOOD LUCK!

Opinion: -Great point-n-shoot camera
-Easy to use features

Bought the D-510 on ebay - $199 with a camerabag and 64mb card

-Battery life is great. people that own this camera dont really know that other expensive digi cams eat batteries like crazy. not the 510. i was charging the batteries on my digital SLR olympus camera 4 or 5 times while my d-510 was still on the first set of batteries. that is a huge difference in battery life.

TIPS for Beginners:
-with the lens open, double clicking the screen button will open your saved pictures (no need to close the door lens)

-If you take a lot of pics, you can save the good ones instead of manually erasing the bad pics one by one. there are always more bad than good ones. to save the good ones use the green protection key, then use erase all, and all the bad pics are gone and the protected pics are still there.
hope that didnt sound complicated? that is a great way to save useful disk space especially if you have a small mb card

-if you use the format button, All pics will be gone including the protected ones.

-the book manual is a quick start-up guide but the CD manual has everything you need to know. use the CD

Here are some really great examples:

http://www2.photosig.com/photos.php?cameraId=974

http://www2.photosig.com/photos.php?cameraId=1113

Problems: -door scratches the body.... back to the drawing board olympus corp.

-8mb smart media card... consider it FREE with your camera and use it for 360 panorama shots

-i read people complaining about the LCD screen. this really isn't a problem. it just a viewer like your TV set or computer monitor. it gets dirty, so just wipe it.

Opinion: both good and bad. as an amateur, i like the ease of use and the outdoor photo's are excellent! But, the quality of indoor shots or outdoor night shots is average to poor!

Problems: outdoor night shots (scenery/skylines etc.) are not good! appear blurry and unfocused. indoor low-light not great either. wearing on front of camera from slide-door!

Opinion: It is a pretty good beginners cam if you're only going for daytime outdoor photographing. The camera is very easy to use but image quality is terrible in low-light conditions (nighttime or indoors).
The camera has great construction though. It feels pretty solid for such a small camera and all the buttons have that nice quality touch.

Problems: Images get very noisy in low-light environments.
Batterytime is too short when you use the LCD.

Opinion: I know that I shouldn't post a review after just a week after buying this camera...but in this week I've been testing (almost) all the features of this camera...so here are my opinions:
Great camera for the money..for beginners..a very good travel companion (128Mb card it's a must!)..easy to use..good quality pictures..good response (lag) times and very good conectivity (USB).
Have two packs of accus and a good quick charger and head for taking pictures...outdoor you can use the Auto setting for light temperature and ISO setting..Depending on the length on trip and possibilities of writing a CD-ROM with the pictures..I recommend HQ or SQ (1280*960) mode for saving space on the smartmedia..SHQ and TIFF only used for studio or very important shots that require perfect details..SHQ makes a 1,3Mb file...HQ-450kb...SQ-280kb..

Problems: Yes..I've encountered a very strange problem...On my Olypus D-510Z (C-200Z) the LCD is greyscale!! Any attempts of viewing colors failed..tried a hardware reset (no power to the camera for 24 hours) as suggested by Olympus customer support..but no effect..all is pure greyscale on the LCD..but..when you look in a very low angle...you can see that white from the menu text is composed from color dots...so the LCD is color...but somehow it was damaged on transport (electronically..I don't know) and now only shows images and all in black&white..If anybody can help I would be grateful :)

Opinion: The D-510 Zoom has been around a year and is still a current model. (Although the new smaller, lighter and more expensive D-520 may eventually take its place). The 510 takes excellent 2.1 MP pics up to 8x10. The camera is simple and easy to use if you read the included CD manual. Easy to transfer pics to computer. Great camera for novice and intermediate user. Highly reccomended

Problems: Only from people who do not read manual and therefore do not know how to fully operate camera. I have read the D-510 does not have the following features; (which it does have)
1. Hold settings when camera is turned off. It does
2. View pics without closing lens. You can very easily.
3. Veiw multiple pics at one time. You can.
4. Delete pics one at a time. You can very quick.
