Essentially a D3 body with a higher-resolution sensor, the 24MP Nikon D3X offers the joint (with the Sony A900) highest pixel count of any current full-frame DSLR. Superficially, the new flagship is the D3's identical twin. The camera's core component, however, is brand new. The 36 x 23.9 mm CMOS sensor provides a resolution of 24.5 megapixels, and while this is - compared to the D3 - a massive jump in resolution, D3X users have to accept a smaller range of sensitivity (ISO 100 to 1600, extendable to ISO 50 to 6400) and slower continuous shooting of five frames per second (7 fps in DX mode) in return.
The superb 51-point AF system and the 1005 pixel metering sensor have been carried over directly and work as well on the D3X as they do on the D3. The D3X's high resolution sensor, combined with a relatively weak AA filter and a superb JPEG engine delivers a level of sharp detail that beats even the strongest competitors including the previous number one in this area, the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III. There is no doubt, if image detail is on top of your priority list the D3X has to be your number one option.

Opinion: Here's the camera we've been waiting for. Initial results are beyond excellent. I print 20 X 30 and larger prints on a regular basis, and the resolution, color fidelity and contrast is more than I expected (especially the resolution). I've used medium format backs on my CONTAX 645, and the results from this NIKON are equal to, or better than those medium format backs that cost up to 4x as much. The ergonomics make this NIKON a real pleasure to use, it fits into the hand perfectly, it's balanced and becomes an extension of your body. My question is, where do we go from here???? The camera is a bit pricy, right now, but it is a good investment for the working professional, like myself. This is the camera to own, especially if you already own those exquisite NIKKOR lenses.

Problems: I have yet to encounter any problems, I am completely impressed with the quality of this tool. NO PROBLEMS!!!
Opinion: The D700 gives me pretty much everything except for histograms in live preview mode and the dual slot for people who REALLY wish to store RAW and JPEG in different CFs. Other than that, the D700 is a superlative camera.
How they can release an "upgrade" without fixing the glaring mistake of NO SELF-CLEANING SENSOR is beyond me. The D700 has a fantastic feature set and is much better for the money.
Problems: No self cleaning of the sensor.
Opinion: image quality is outstanding - Nikon have clearly done a lot of work on the AA filter and supporting electronics, images straight from the camera are excellent. Speed / responsiveness is excellent, as for the D3.
High ISO images are also impressive up to 1600.
Worth it - if you need the ability to crop or if you print large. Same comment would apply to anyone considering MFD or other higher resolution sensor cameras.
Problems: None to date
Opinion: This forum was not set up for people to complain about prices! When the Canon 1Ds MkIII came out it was over 5 grand too so prices will come down. It's a real shame that this site is used so often by people slagging off Nikon against Canon and visa versa. I own both Canon and Nikon kit and both have their strengths and weaknesses but both companies manufacture excellent cameras.
It would also be nice to see an end to bogus comments from people who don't own the model of camera they're posting on and leaving one star ratings because they are a fan of the other camp.
Lets try and keep it professional guys, honest user reviews warts and all from people who actually own the camera they are posting on. This way potential buyers can decide if the camera is right for them!!!
