Opinion: It has been over four years since my last entry on the D2H cameras. I loved it then and still have two bodies that are my main business cameras. In early 2008 with the demise of the newspaper industry, I returned to a previous career after 10 years (as a freelancer, contract, &, finally, staffer) with a little free weekly that got hit hard by the recession. BUT my D2H cameras are still the love of my photographic passions. While the D3 (& later) gives more megapixels & a higher ISO range, I have found with some strategic software & equipment buys, I am still totally happy with my D2's. One body has over 160,000 clicks and still going strong. The other body was bought as a Nikon refurb unit and has just over 60,000 clicks. I have purchased the Nikkor 18-200mm (version 1), Nikkor 35mm f1.8 DX (super sharp even wide open), & Nikkor 85mm f1.8 (will be selling soon for the f1.4 version to go along with the Tokina 12-24mm f4 and Tokina 80-200mm f2.8.

If you are a youngster just starting toward wanting to become a photojournalist, these are great cameras that came be found on eBay for about 15%-20% of what they cost me new and some have less than 10,000 clicks on a shutter designed for 250,000!

The 37ms shutter response is faster than anything ever made. The latest Canon 1D series and Nikon D3 series have a longer shutter response time. And with the 8fps capability the D2H is right up there with the big boys. With the right resizing software (I have used Genuine Fractals and have upgraded to its latest version called Perfect Resize) and noise reduction software (I prefer Nik Dfine), the need for more megapixels & higher ISO capabilty can wait.

So take from someone who is still having fun with a "vintage" digital SLR, you could do worse than buying a used D2H.

Problems: I have the dreaded meter failure on the first body but have only had CLR maintenance since. My two bodies have been great overall!!

Opinion: I just bought a used d2h and the pictures it produces are wonderful. I love the colors, and the smoothness reminds me of film. In my opinion this is the best digital camera Nikon has built. It's a keeper!

Problems: none.

Opinion: I purchased a used D2H, for cheap, earlier in the year along with a $1000 Nikon AF-I 300 2.8 lens (hard to pass up!) for baseball season and worked great. Love the colors and fast focus. A little bit noisy at the higher ISOs (1250, 1600) but dead on exposure helps with that somewhat.

Problems: AWB can be a little off at times but in open sun, its no problem. I dislike the low 1/250 flash sync.

Opinion: This solid camera has already completed 4 year with me and has proved to be one of the best cameras I have ever owned.

Problems: None so far except the metering issue.

Opinion: I've owned this camera for a few years. I like this camera, especially the rapid fire frame rate -- just wonderful for shooting events involving racing, e.g. dog sled racing, etc. The camera's design, layout, and ergonomics are superb. Don't be frightened by "only" 4 megabytes, as the images from this camera produce beautiful prints. My camera has seen extended use it in all sorts of conditions including extreme cold -- -50F here in the Arctic and blistering heat -- +120F in the desert Southwest.

Problems: I'm surprised that Nikon released a flagship products with issues -- my light meter fail almost immediately after purchase. Occasional, I get unexplained lens error message when shooting, which hasn't, but could interfere with shooting. My D70 hasn't skipped a beat.

Opinion: Jumping from a D1 to a D2H was great, I love the 4 megapixel over the 2.75 one of the D1 (still a great camera)
I shoot landscape's and while I am about to purchase a D2Xs the D2H has been a GREAT camera. I've printed a cropped image to 36" wide x 12.5" high on my Epson R2400 printer. The results are awesome.

For anyone looking to purchase used, they are a great camera (even for long exposure night shots)

Check out my images on Flickr flickr.com/photos/sgrunberger

Problems: Only thing I've found is that with the new AF-S 17mm-55mm lens sometimes I don't get perfect focus, unsure if it's the lens or the camera, but I don't have any issues with my other lenses.

Opinion: I have two of these cameras, but will post once. For it's intended use, this is a great camera. For your average sports photographer, this camera will not dissapoint. It focusses in the worst conditions imaginable with accuracy. It has no shutter lag at all and will allow you to learn timing of your sport. I have prints as large as 18x24 from the 4.1mp sensor with no problems. This camera also uses the iTTL flash to make the Nikon CLS system the easy to use and most reliable exposure in flash i have seen from 28 years of photography.

Problems: One of my D2H cameras had to go back to Nikon for infamous meter fix. With no cost to me even though it was bought used.

Opinion: This camera produces consistant quality images despite the 4.1mp size, and has a very very fast work rate. the battery is amazing and lasts forever. PR usage for desktop publishing and magazines up to A4 repro is fine, studio model shoots with A4 prints, events with printing on the night 7x5 and 10x8 - great. very happy would like the D2x for occasional larger image size. but speed of D2H is amazing.

Problems: The wifi using peer to peer- ie directly linking to computor for instant use of images, is very very hard to set up unless you are a major computor/nikon expert. the 50 page manual does'nt help either. I think it may be easier if you are using a router to form a link and transmitt images. as it will auto link - up. UPDATE: Thanks to reading these reviews I new what to expect when the metering system completely failed on a Sunday location job, guessed the exposure and got the job done. Contacted Nikon Monday, they got camera Tuesday Fixed it Wednesday, using it Thursday, despite being 120 miles away. and free off charge to. Great service.
