Opinion: Take a look at the date of this posting.
The cam is something around 12 years old and ...
it is great!

I am an foto amateur who loves good professional tools. The cam is rockstable and fits perfectly into my hands like an Makita or Festo tools.

My D1 has been used a lot by the previously ower but all controls are workig nearly perfect.
The handling has no "fat", nothing, a cam does not need. The best way to work with it, because of the bad screen and the slow processor, is like using an analog cam. Take pictures and watch them at home.
Don't crop the pict afterward too much, you have no pixels to waist. :-)

I make printouts up to DIN A4 (30x20 cm) and it is perfect for web galleries.

Taking pictures with an D1 has something of driving an oldtimer car.
Every new camera will beat this cam in most technical aspects.
And no affordable camera can give me this great feeling.

Problems: This cam is sometimes an old diva. If you use a weak batterie, it works like normal but all picts are white or black.

Opinion: The first proper DSLR? Not counting all those Kodak/Canikon hybrids.

This is a likeable camera (nice feel to it), and for its price today is highly recommended for those who want to try the Dx body without splashing out massive money.

Images are good, JPG's are better than the Canon 1D JPG's (tho' the 1D is an all-round better camera...it is also 2 years more current after all).

2.7mp is enough (especially for web galleries and forums), but of course no real cropping or massive prints allowed.

The high ISO performance isn't great...detail being sacrificed to keep the image clean(ish).

The images at base ISO have a lot of good depth in them...use prime lenses to get the most out of the image (they seem to work best).

Get this over the D1H or D1X if price is a factor. Stick a 50mm on it and shoot away!

Problems: Battery life isn't great...always carry one or two more with you.

Cumbersome menus and slow navigation (ergonomically not that amazing).

Opinion: Bought 2 a year apart secondhand. The first by serial number is in the first 250 made and is in almost unmarked condition, however having taken a fall and it stopped working I bought a much later one which had been very used (and abused), this ones now playing up but is still usable, the first I repaired and is still going strong.
Image wise the D1's allow me to capture fast action like cricket and passing steam loco's and print them A3 size without issue, once the w/b is corrected the colours are very good, shoot RAW for critical stuff at work (and play) fine jpg for everything else.
My 11 year old son prefers my D1's to his higher pixel count p&s and my D50, he already knows how to stand/hold and breathe to get the best from it!http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3242/2749911001_de4af63abd_b.jpg

Problems: First D1 'died' when I took a fall on rocks on the IoW, taking a blow on the lens/back of my hand on the grip, percussive maintenance got it going several times until I stripped it down and resoldered the floating capcitors:

Second D1 has developed a problem with the aperture control, only usable in M & S modes with option 22-1 enabled with M/F and AF-D lenses, when time permits I'd strip it and look for the fault if obvious, time for a D1x perhaps!

Opinion: this is the 2nd D1 I have owned in the last 3-4 years. Bought it for 200.00. It's a real clean camera that was overhauled by Nikon in 2007 for use in a movie. Works like a charm and super value.

Problems: none

Opinion: Bought a used one for only 250 euro. As a backup for my D1X, which is also a used one. In my opinion a bargain! I love the picure quality. Considering the age of the camera it is phenomenal.

Problems: So far....none

Opinion: Purchased pre-used as a back-up for my D100.
Extremely well made, far better than the D100.
Easy to use, apart from the unnecessarily complex menu system.
Image quality for a 2.7 mp camera is very good.
No magnification on image preview is one shortcoming, but then again, is it really needed.
Am now considering selling the D100 and getting another D1 or a D1X.
No sign of any rubber falling off as yet.
It may be 5 or 6 years old, but it's still like new.

Problems: None, apart from the occasional mirror lock-up (easily sorted)

Opinion: this camera may by 5 years old but it still kicks you know what. Built like a tanks and I find it easy to use. It may only be 2.7 mp but it producing great images for me. I got it about 1 month ago a what I consider a super deal and haven't though twice about it.

Opinion: Great used buy at $500, controls are very similar to F100, great image quality
in NEF using Capture 4.2. Don't need more MP since I usually only print 4x6
or 5X7. Build spoils you quickly, anything less feels like a toy.

Problems: Noise in low light can be problematic, rubber grip over CF door falls off
quickly, and batteries don't last (carry two).

Opinion: I can only say that this camera is probably the best camera ever made, the MegaPixel i size is just perfect and the pictures are so good. When youre used to a Nikon F5 its no problem to find the way through this camera. Just Great

Problems: Only problems i encountered is the samme problem we see on every other DSLR cameras and even on compact kameras, its the dust on the CCD/CMOS sensor. But its quickly cleaned and ready to shoot again.
