Why get this over the 18-105? Four reasons: 1. 16-85 has a metal mount; the 18-105 has a plastic mount 2. 16-85 has active VR, and Nikon claims it is VRII; 18-105 does not have active VR, and Nikon does not claim VRII 3. 16-85 has ful AF-S system (i.e., MA/M switch); 18-105 has only an A and M switch 4. The additional 2 mm at the wide end is very noticeable It gets a 4.5 based on the above and given its very high image quality (considering it is a zoom). It loses half a star due to the cost ...

Very good lens! VEry sharp and good lens distortion! Is quite fast focusing and has a robust body. I think actually is the best lens in this focal range. It would be perfect with more aperture, like f4 at 105mm :) LEnte molto buona, sia per nitidezza che per controllo della distorsione. La messa a fuoco è veloce ed il corpo dell'obiettivo sembra abbastanza robusto. Credo che in questo range di focali sia il migliore zoom attualmente disponibile. Sarebbe davvero perfetto se avesse un'apertura ...

Contra: Small Aperture at Long end (127mm) not so good for low light shooting, even with VR Wide end(24mm) is the weekest optical point of the Lens In comparison with the 17-55 F2,8 DX: I'm ...

I've been using two copies of this lens on both the D90 and now the D7000. Long story short, after 20,000 or so images snagged by this lens, I'm still a huge fan. My previous and current copy perform identically, both are sharp, and built solid. It's a heavy setup, but delivers impressive results and worth the weight. Perfect travel lens. It honestly covers the perfect range for the bulk of desired shots, from wide to moderate telephoto. Very well priced given the build quality, speed, ...

To be honest, I think this lens is over rated. It is certainly a good all around lens, but it's not really excellent at anything or bad at anything. This is for people who want an all around lens to carry with them on vacation or such. Quite good for landscapes as well. However, f5.6 at 85mm is just quite slow for anything but still life or general photography in good light. VR works very well though! You can check out my complete review here: ...

Always watched with envy when I saw pros shooting their 24-120mm lens ONLY, during a whole event. Well, Nikon has made a stepped down version for us DX enthusiasts, without loss of build quality, and - most importantly - without breaking the bank with an expensive "N" lens. Won't repeat what the others said, because I agree with all the above, and I also have a D7K. Will add as pros the excellent sealing, and the silky focusing ring with a nice distance scale indicator (agreeing with the ...

Reading this review, you may be looking for a mid-range zoom that gives you a little more than the standard kit lenses. At the time of this writing, what is available from Nikon is the standard fair of 18-55, 18-105 and the discontinued 18-135mm lenses. All of these lenses perform above expectation when their price is taken into account. For me, these lenses are not in the running for the simple reason they have a plastic bayonet mount. To me the $5.00 Nikon saved on this cost cutting ...

The range is almost optimal and the quality at almost all focal length is very good. A very effective image stabilization that allows me to forget the tripod in most situations. The AF is quick and very accurate. The contrast and the colors are very good. The build quality is good. For an walk around lens is excellent being extremely versatile. For the budget oriented people 18-105 mm VR would be a solution. Problems: The zoom rubber got a little loose after more than 3 years of heavy use. It ...

I've found 95% of the range this lens offers to be more than expected for the price. Good feel real nice, smooth. Makes my d90 feel real smart and d7000 a great couple no doubts. Read all posts and search on all sites. I think you'll agree a real keeper. Negatives ...none.

I researched a number of Nikon lenses over a few weeks to initially use with a D90 body (Now a D7000). I even loaned a number of Nikon zoom lenses from friends. The 16mm to 85mm is by far the most practical zoom lens produced by Nikon as the 16mm wide angle view has actually a much wider view than 18mm models. I do believe a long tele lens is not necessary for most photography and more than 95% of my shots are taken with this amazing lens. I actually have a number of Nikon Tele zoom lenses, ...
