Opinion: The S640 is attractive in terms of specification, fast 2.7 lens and high ISO6400 capability but the marketing and the experience do not match up. In good light it takes excellent photos. In poor light conditions set on high ISO it does Nikon's reputation no favours. Nikon can do better than this. Set it on fixed ISO range maximum 800 ASA and it works OK.
6400 images are so soft with high interpolation and complete loss of detail to the point of being nearly unusable. Overall pretty disappointing.. I should have bought a G11 to replace my G3 instead of the S640.
Problems: Will not handle all SD cards. Only one out of 4 worked for me. Works fine with SDHC cards but not all SD despite the spec saying SD.
Soft images on 3200/6400 ISO to the point where the detail is lost completely. Practical limit is 800.
Delivered with 2 bad pixels on the display. Annoying but not unexpected in this price range.
Opinion: I have been an avid Canon and Olympus camera user and finally decided to buy my first Nikon after reading the great reviews of the S640 online before it luanched in the market in Aug 2009. I bought the camera so I would not have to lug my Canon Digital Rebel with me to Paris in order to capture some great evening night shots which I have never been able to do successfully with other pocket digital cameras due to the low ISO speeds. The 6400 ISO certainly made a huge difference !! I took 250 pics with nearly half at night or indoors and only used a flash a few times indoors. Of all my pics, I only had a few that were blurred to a point where I deleted them and the others were crisp and clear in any light setting. Face tracking and anti-shake made a huge difference as well and I really liked the fast shutter lag from startup to first shot.
Problems: Although the camera got high ratings on being among the fastest shutter lags between shots and from startup, I found it often took more time than i expected for it to reset it's auto focus in between shots when in SINGLE shot mode. If you change the setting from SINGLE to CONTINOUS this helped a bit and by holding down the shutter button, the camera will shoot multiple shots simultaneously using the same auto focus setting. This seemed to solve the issue and allowed me to capture some great fast action shots and then choose the best of the bunch.
