Opinion: This camera could be so much better than it is with so little effort. Hardware-wise it's great. It has a superb lens, but the firmware features are pretty dumbed down and the user interface is difficult to use.

There is no optical viewfinder (no surprise) but the LCD display is dim in daylight and so reflective you can't see what you are shooting. This is just poor design. What were they thinking?

The autofocus hunts seemingly forever-- a manual focus would be a great addition. You can set it to focus at infinity (landscape mode) and you can set it for continuous shooting, but you can't do both. Why not?

Every now and then I manage to overcome the designed-in obstacles and take a great shot that shows how much potential this camera has-- unfortunately, using it is more often an exercise in frustration.

Problems: Bad design limits usefulness.

Opinion: Its an okay camera that has a great lens but takes only average pics. Its just that I'm writting this in 2008 and now has been surpased by newer models.

Problems: None yet but I bet that lens cap won't last long.

Opinion: I have had this camera for about a year now. I bought it in preparation for an Alaska soft adventure cruise. I wanted a camera with a long telephoto to get those whale, eagle, otter, sea lion etc pics that a 3x would not get. I also wanted something small - I have had large cameras and just got tired of the lugging around.

The Alaska photos were wonderful. Nikon color is always excellent, the 10X was essential (if there is a 12x or 15x I might trade up) the VR helped get some long shots that I would have blurred otherwise. The VR also helps with low light shots - I have taken a lot of available light night shots that VR made possible.

!0x was still not long enought for some nature shots - but eh only folks who got better shots had large higher pixel count cameras who could crop more. And I did not envy the cameras that wweiged many times the S10.

Compared to earlier Nikons menu control of this camera is good.

Problems: Yes the flesh is weak as in all small cameras. Auto-focus could be better.
Initially it is hard to hold - but you figure it out - might be difficult for large hands.

Opinion: The 10x zoom is what I like most for the price tag. In fact the digital zoom with VR combination is remarkable. I took a shot of a bill board about 1 km away and with 10x and digital zoom, the letters can be easily read (which are only about 30mm high) without the edge smearing or blurring, thanks to VR . Also the BSS is very useful for taking shots which gives optimum result with available light. Only problem I feel is (as many others feel) the absence of manual control. And also flash shots in normal distance of about 3 to 5 feet away look washed out. But overall I feel it is worth the value of money.

Opinion: Worst camera I have ever used. I owned an old nicon that took amazing photos, loved it and it got stolen. Bought a newer Nikon mostly this one for it's swivel capabilities (have kids in concerts) knew nikon was user friendly so went for it based on stores recommendation. BAD decision! Will buy either a brand new Panasonic or Leica camera. Store has now confirmed and advised that Nicon had "issues" during that phase of production. Geez, thanks~

Problems: Terrible images, poor quality camera. I would never recommend this camera to anyone, features and ease of use or not. I see all the good reviews and think, maybe I just got the dud?!?!?! too bad...it has turned me off the NiKon name all together!

Opinion: Fun camera, capable of producing very good images. The swivel lens means you can get low-angle shots without having to lie on the ground, and also means you can use the camera screen like a waist-level viewfinder - perfect for candids, and for added stability.Having this much zoom range in a small package is a real blessing when you don't want to carry your pro gear around. The continuous shooting mode is great - just keep shooting and pick out the best shots later.People complaining that this isn't an SLR need to get real - try sticking an SLR in your pocket! This is a great little tool,at a great price.Thanks,Nikon.
