Opinion: I've had this camera for almost 2 years now, used it sparingly.
Here are the goods:
size - very handy to pop in your pocket or purse for the ladies
power - uses 2 AA batteries
ease - simple and easy to use for beginners
LCD - decent screen size
pic quality - great in optimal conditions (i.e. lighting)
Here are the bad:
Startup - takes what feels like forever to start
pic quality - low lighting shots are always blurry
pic processing - slower then molasses, from the time you take a pic to when you can take another one
Maybe I'm being harsh on this little guy becuase it is a 2 year old point and shoot and alot these cameras have the same issues (hence why DSLR's are available). All in all, its an ok camera, but I wouldn't buy it again if given the chance.
Problems: No mechanical or construction issues.
Opinion: I had a couple of problems with this camera right from the start. I suppose i started out from the wrong point, having originally seriously considered the P5100 and then gone for this as I thought I wouldn't have to worry about it in my pocket and i'd take it everywhere. Whereas that is trues and it's always in my pocket, I suppose I expected more froom this camera from the start (without having to pay much either).
First the focus didn't seem to work well adn having sent some samples to Nikon they suggested I send it to them for recalibration. that seemed to work quite well and the image focus improved. then 7 months later the whole len / focus mechanism stopped working. Sent it back again and under warrantee they fixed that problem FOC. The service from Nikon is excellent and i have no worries about ever buying another camera, although this one had problems. For what it does it does it well. It slips into the pocket very easily and on auto take a good picture - provided the light is good. It takes very nice portraits and close ups - but i think action shots, flash and dark lighting are weak areas. It's not that the camera can't take good pictures, its just that the lens system and the sensitivity doesn't lend it well to difficult conditions.
Problems: The image quality was not what I expected from a 7mp camera and I sent Nikon some samples a week after getting it. To be fair they replied very quickly and suggested I send it to them to be recalibrated - it came back a little better but not really what you expect from 7 megapixels. It's pretty much what I'd expect from about 2. 7 months later the lens has stopped working properly and the camera is back under warranty and being fixed again. I think their service department in the UK is great and it works very well - but I'd rather not use it at all.
Opinion: this is a beginner's "you get what you pay for" type of camera. it's only good for well lighted conditions or flash photography.
the only great plus i can see for this camera is that it runs on AA batteries so it's not hard to look for rechargeables(or alkaline for emergencies)
when i first bought this, and a pair of rechargeable batteries, a full charge gave me 800+ shots(2400mAh). it claims 1000 shots on Energizer's Lithium.
Pros:
Light
Battery Efficient
Cheap
Problems: i was used to looking at moderate quality screens from cellphones to other digital cameras i've used... it was a bit of a shock for me that its 2.4" screen has very low resolution.
its autofocus is really really loud. moving the camera around triggers the autofocus and auto brightness and it goes crazy. it's like something making scratching sounds inside. i wish it will not trigger unless the capture button is pressed(halfway)
you cannot override the iso setting and most of the pictures are noisy except for bright conditions.
the focusing at night(and most low light conditions) is really really horrible. i wish they would proving a guide light for the autofocus like sony does.
no image stabilization
the scene button is too far left and really small it's hard to operate with one hand
the flash recharges really really slow(sometimes up to 5 seconds) especially if the batteries are <50% full.
i dont see much difference when i interpolated its 5mp(normal) picture from 7mp(fine). i feel like i was scammed.
