Opinion: Update to my previous post.

I've bought it : the 990 is in my hands now.

In front of me I've my old 950, an Olympus C2020z, another Olympus ( a C2500L ) and, obviously, the new CoolPIX 990.

What is the best? Oh, guys, as you know, ''the best'' doesn't exist : every camera has pros and cons.

I can only say that Nikon has putted the ''pro-sumer'' concept of digicam into the next level and the reason is not only
the bigger CCD.

The actual CoolPIX looks and feels MORE ''professional'' than its predecessors ( and, in my opinion, than the other digicams
in front of me ) : it's a pleasure to handle and to shoot with it.

In your hands you've a little monster of technology; don't forget : the 990 is the digital paladine of the Nikon super-professional
family of cameras.

If the 950 was ( and is ) one of the best 2.1 Mp digicams, the 990 is, in my opinion, the today point of reference for consumers
and other manufacturers.

Rocky solid, incredible hand grip, total control over any setting, superb Nikkor optics that rival with the Carl Zeiss myth,
expandability over any imagination, money saver ( yes, if you have previous converters you can use them without any adapter:
put in mind that it's a rare example of commercial and technical coherence ), amazing image quality ( as usual for Nikon ).

Do you want a digicam that satisfies the 99,9% of your needs? Look seriously at the CoolPIX 990, it would be the choice for you.

Do you want to sell your 950 and buy the 990? Do it : it's worth the trouble.

If the 990 isn't the camera for you, don't worry, there are some other valuable choices on the market.

Problems: I confirm my old considerations and I add another one : the red eye issue is a false problem 'cause there are thousands of 35mm
cameras at around 300$ that need an external flash; if you're ready to pay about 900$ ( three times the money ) for a digicam,
please, consider a +70/100$ for a good external speedlight.

Barrel distortion/chromatic aberration : as Phil said, first, it's possible to correct them easily by software, second, they appear
only in certain conditions.

To Nikon : thank you for this digicam and thank you for the time Mike Rubin has spent to answer our questions ( I would like to know
when other manufacturers will do the same thing ).

Last but not the least : in the next CoolPIX ( 1000? ), please, add a totally NEW and MORE bigger optic system ( not for a quality
problem but to shut-up useless polemics ).

Ciao,

Emanuele.

Opinion: The battle is over. This one is the clear winner. It does everything I need for the next few years.

I can't see buying anything else.

Problems: None

Problems: 3 defect CCD pixels: can return camera if my dealer gets a new supply of 990s
after transferring images via USB to PC I somehow managed to get it in a mode where the camera remained 'on' when
the dial OFF | A-REC | M-REC was set to OFF !

Opinion: Great image and construction. Outstanding macro capability particularly with rotating body. Lots of features, not all may be useful. Programable features tend to lock in functions and create confusion. 16 MB flash card barely enough. No remote, rechargeable batteries or charger. No case. Manual poorly organized. Expect more accessories for $1M.

Problems: No problems
