Opinion: I bought my camera, second hand from Amazon's Market place for $195 and I can tell you that I have had nothing but joy! I really find the Nikon Coolpix 885 the best value for money. In spite of the camera being discontinued, it is the best investment I ever made, and it is so easy to use. The camera I have has taken over 6000 pics and still going strong.

Problems: No problems encountered at all.

Opinion: Piece of @$*#! Constant "SYSTEM ERROR"s! Removing battery for a minute used to fix it, so I didn't bother sending it in. Now it is totally locked up, and no longer under warranty. Nothing will clear the system error! Nikon wants tons of money to fix it. It was broken when I bought it! I will never buy another Nikon product!!!

DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!!!

Problems: constant "SYSTEM ERROR" messages

eventually locked up completely

often had one bright red dot somewhere in the image

took FOREVER to store images onto memory card! had to wait and wait between shots. Missed lots of photo opportunities!

Nikon unwilling to admit to manufacture defect and recall or fix for free!

NEVER BUY NIKON!!!

Opinion: A friend complained about the shutter lag. Tried it. The camera seems to take the picture about 1 second after you press the button. Something wrong with the settings or something wrong with the camera? There is shutter lag on my Canon V3 and Ixus i but it is not so bad.

Opinion: I purchased this camera quite a while ago but never got around to posting my
review of it until now. Like all consumer digital cameras, the CP885 has its
good and bad points. That said, I have been VERY happy with it. I'm so happy
with the CP885 in fact, that I use it as my main "go to" camera for just about
everything ... including a little studio work from time to time. That's right, I
use external flashes with digital slave triggers when I need to do something
with a real flash. The main thing I love about the CP885 is the VERY compact
size and ease of use. Candids are a snap with this camera ... unlike trying to
take candids with a giant SLR pointed at someone. And if you know what
you're doing this little go-anywhere camera can become a serious tool. Thanks
to in-camera noise reduction the images are much clearer (even at ISO 400)
than any other consumer digicam I've used. Obviously just about any DSLR
will capture images with less ISO noise, but the CP885 does a great job for a
consumer digicam.

Perhaps the biggest benefit to the CP885 is that you can use all the best
Coolpix accessories on this camera (conversion lenses, remote control, LCD
hoods, spotting scopes, etc.)

Right now (late 2003) you can find factory reconditioned CP885 cameras for
less than $200. At that price you shouldn't pass up the chance to own this little
gem.

Problems: OK. As I said in the beginning of my review, the CP885 isn't without "some"
problems.

1) As many people have said before, the CP885 has some problems with red
saturation. That said, Phil did an EXCELLENT job of explaining how to fix
this in his review of the CP885. In Photoshop or Photoshop Elements go
under Hue/Saturation and lower the red saturation to -15, and increase green
to +40, and blue to +40. I've found that this corrects the colors 99 percent of
the time. Although it might sound like a pain to have to adjust the color in all
your images, I don't always see the need to adjust the color, and the CP885
images require less Levels and Curves adjustments than images from my other
consumer digicams.

2) Some people have complained about lens problems and strange error
messages with their CP885 and CP4300 cameras. This lens problem is usually
what causes the evil error message on the LCD. While attempting to make the
great lens on the CP885 and CP4300 compact, Nikon created a lens that is a
little more fragile than the lenses on some other consumer cameras. If you stick
the camera in your pocket and something pushes on the lens, or if you apply
pressure to the lens while it's extended, you can damage the lens
motor/assembly and the lens will stop working. The easy solution to this is to
attach the lens/filter adapter to the front of the camera. The adapter will
protect the lens from pressure/impact. It's a lot easier to buy the $15 lens/filter
adapter than pay $100 for a repair. I've always used the adapter on the camera
and I've never had any problems.

There are a few other minor things that are comon to all other consumer
digicams, but a skilled photographer who understands the CP885 can
overcome those shortcomings VERY easily.

Opinion: I enjoied a lot taking pictures with this camera. It's very compact, and it has a wonderful design. It's very easy to use and it garantees wonderful landscape picture.
Every pics has got too much red and that makes the picture not so much natural, expecially about complexion. But the general performance it provides can be considered good enough.

Problems: be very careful with the lens caps.

Opinion: Bought camera based on sharp photos and have not been disappointed. Outstanding prints up to at least 8"x10". Automatic mode works well most of the time with Scene mode able to accommodate all but 1 or 2 (out of nearly 1000!) photos attempted. Would have gotten a "5" for value except for problems (below). Have owned for about 14 months now.

Problems: Observed "reds" problem, but could correct easily in software.
Biggest problem has been "hot pixels". Began noticing a few at long exposures under low-light conditions; then more and more appeared under brighter and brighter conditions (e.g., daylight sky!). Sent back for repairs, returned quickly with altered white balance. Looked good for a couple of weeks, but.... hot pixels began reappearing (different location). Probably going to return it for repair again.

Opinion: Easy to use
Features are good
Good brand

Problems: Shutter lag is unacceptable
Take a long time to save photos, switch between playback and record mode.
Auto focus is slow and sometimes cannot focus correctly.
White balance is a disaster (red and red!)
I will not buy Nikon DC in the future (only DC not SLR)

Opinion: BAd experience with Nikon Digital. Very easy to break down

Problems: MI NEFASTA EXPERIENCIA CON UNA NIKON DIGITAL
