Opinion: Had camera for about 18 months, taken thousands of photos with it, excellent take anywhere compact camera.
Opinion: I bought this having had problems with Olympus P&S. I am so pleased I bought it, it is excellent. It is used as a family camera and very impressive.
Opinion: Wonderful take everywhere camera. Amazing macro capabilities ---- Coolpix wins handsdown in the macro department across the board. This is my 3rd Coolpix model and Nikon never dissapoints. It's a pretty staightfoward camera but once you master and read your manual, this is a camera with huge possibilities. It renders colors very well and the images are damn sharp, not too much over-processing going on in-camera. I love this little machine, it goes with me everywhere. It's like my American Express --- I never leave home without it. For a quality point-n-shoot I highly recommend it.
Problems: In terms of peripheral attachments like aux. lenses and speedlights --- its limited. Would love to be able to pimp this camera out like you can the legendary Nikon 900 and 4500 series swivel body cameras.
Opinion: IMHO the best choice for that money
Opinion: Compact Easy to use. No major complaints
Problems: Cycle time with flash is enough for the subject to fall asleep. I am amazed that it takes 10-12 seconds to be able to take another photo.
Opinion: I use it mainly for undewater photography and it is very good!
Opinion: This is a fine camera, I purchased one the first week it was available, in March 2005. I have taken wonderfully clear, bright and colorful photos. I have also taken some excellent low-light pics, but of course almost all compact digicams have limitations in low-light. However, I have been able to focus in complete darkness using the AF assist, and the pics have been crystal clear. This camera is an excellent performer with a ton of useful features, perfect for carrying in my pocket when I'm not using my Nikon DSLR. I highly recommend it!
Problems: None
Opinion: Very disappointed -
The features are very standard. The D-Lighting feature is great but this is something you need to manually apply to each picture, after it's been taken. It adjusts the brightness of the picture very well but frankly I think almost every picture you take needs D-Lighting. So, what is the point of this feature!
But who cares about the features if it can't even focus well to take a decent picture.
Contrary to most of other reviews on this camera, this camera was very disappointing. Or perhaps I got a lemon!
Problems: Anyhow, I think the biggest problem I had was with the Auto-Focus. Most outdoor pictures are fine, except anything under shaded area. I took a picture of a group of 10 people by a tree and my camera was set at about 10 feet. I used the timer to take the picture and all faces were blurry.
Here is the most disappointing part. I attended a wedding ceremony and banquet last weekend and took about 50 pictures. All of them where taken indoor and 90% of them are blurry. Unbelievable! My old Canon A40 at 2MP can take better picture that this one.
As a reference, I found someone who had the same problem on the Internet. Just do a google search on, "5900 7900 sd400 steve's".
Luckily, the vendor let me exchange for another camera. So I got the Canon SD400 and I’m very happy with it.
Opinion: Nikon 5900 - piece of junk ?
Problems: I bought Nikon coolpix 5900 couple weeks ago and I notice that this camera has real problem with choosing appropriate ISO value in auto mode. I mean camera always choose ISO 64 even if thereby has to choose shutter speed shorten then 1/60 ( for example 1/16, 1/8 … ). This setting causes that most photos taken by this camera just aren’t sharp. I was inform Nikon Corporation about this problem and they comfier that the problem really exist ( “I've investigated your issue and have opened an official inquire with Nikon Corporation Japan regarding the function of the AUTO ISO system in this model.” – I get information like that from Manager Product Testing,Nikon Digital Imaging, Nikon Inc.) but after all they said that they won’t to do anything with this issue, because I can always set ISO manually even in AUTO and this is enough resolution to avoid this problem.
For me this camera is completely unuseful because of this problem ( really most part of photo taken by this camera aren’t sharp at all ) and if I wanted to play with ISO setting, probably I would buy something like Canon 350D or Nikon D70.
But never mind I just want to ask if someone else take notice of this problem as well. Maybe someone has real resolution of this problem ?
I also want to warns you. Before you choose Nikon think twice. I just lose almost 300$ buying this model.
