Opinion: I got the 5900 for personal use. I realize that the color deepth is not as good as I expected. I used to have a FujiFilm FinePix 2400Z and it has much better image quality. I took my Nikon 5900 back to the store and exchanged for the FujiFilm FinePix F810, which gives me much better and vivid colors. I recommend Fuji if you are looking for vivid, real and beautiful colors.

Problems: Colors in pictures and too pale, not goo=lor realism and not very sharp results.

Opinion: I have a Nikon 8700 and needed a camera for travel. I bought this 5900 but the pictures do not seem clear and bright even in a "vivid" color mode.

I need to see what else is out there for clear crisp photos.

Opinion: I have had the Nikon 5900 for 5 days. My opinion:

PRO's
* Good solid construction. The battery and memory card doors feel solid. Metal casing.

* Great battery life. Still on original charge. I have taken 168 pictures and over 300mb of video and the battery indicator is on 50%. I have been playing with the menu's for and hour or two also.

* Features. The scene modes I have used have worked very well. I have used sunset, indoor, night portrait, panorama, backlit. All have produced impressive results. The best indoor pictures I have seen from a mid-range digital camera. I love the sports mode where it can do 16 shots in quick succession...shows all the flaws of my golf swing. I like the bracketing feature also.

* Picture quality I feel is very good. We took several shots to day in the park with sunlight, shade, water, trees and the quality is excellent. That was on auto setting. I have set the picture mode to Vivid Colour. For some reason the default setting is Normal colour whichis not as vivid.

* I love the voice memo feature.

* If you turn the welcome screen off the time from power on to taking the first picture is less than 2 seconds.

* Time between shots is about two seconds.

Problems: CONS

* There is no button to easily turn the LCD screen off and on. This is done via the menu and you chose on or off. It would be nice to set it to on always and just turn it off manually when I wont be taking a pic for a few mins as I take all my pics using the LCD screen.

* Lack of manual focus.

* The "pictures remaining" count is not accurate. On a empty 512mb card it shows 201 pics left. Each pic is about 1.3mb to 1.8mb. After I take 20 pics is still shows 190 pics left.

CONCLUSION

In my opinion this is a great camera for the price (AU$599) Great point and shoot camera. I am impressed with the picture quality, speed of use and the fact that of the 160 odd pictures I have taken only one is blurred and two are over-exposed.

Opinion: I really like the value of this camera. The construction and features are excellent. I think that some of the photographs are somewhat on the "soft" side, but can easily be improved with a sharpening filter. The 30fps video mode with audio is great for capturing Quicktime movies.

Problems: I wish this had a step down from 5MP to 4MP. It only offers 5MP, 3MP, 2MP, 1MP and VGA. I miss the 4MP option.
