Opinion: I have used it for more than 6 years now and I am still using it for light occasions. It has never failed me to provide technically [shutter-and-apperture-balanced and focused] images.
Problems: As every pocket does, it lacks the response time from the release button to the exposure thus I have often lose my moments. Out of 10 exposures, it provides me with average of 1 great image with perfect moment.., while it is 5 to 1 using my D90. =P ...Still, a great number for a value pocket.
Opinion: I have used this camera for 4 years (since 2004). It is my first digital camera and I have been nothing but pleased with it. The battery always lasts longer than I need it to and the pictures are clear and sharp (I use the auto mode 95% of the time and rarely use the "scene" mode).
I often use the camera to take videos at concerts and the sound and audio quality is great. I have no complaints about the camera and comparing it to current models, it has always been impossible to find a replacement (with more zoom/megapixels or that can hold a bigger SD card) that I like as well.
Problems: The only problem I have is a small scratch on the LCD screen - caused from placing the camera in my purse with my keys many times. It was my error and I do not feel the screen scratches "easily".
Opinion: excellent picture quality --> colours are very realistic, very good value bought new for $270 in China.
Problems: pictures taken with flash seem a bit washed out
Opinion: I used this camera over 2 years. It's a great 3 mega pixel camera, excellent TV quality video features, ok image.
Battery life is average, with a 256Mb SD card, battery will run before you run out of memory space, so I carry a spare battery.
The orange spotlight can get annoying and it blinds people, I wish there was a menu to turn it off. Flash options are limited, and often my photos with flash, have people squinting or blinking.
Indoor photos are difficult to achieve without using a tripod, or lean the camera against a wall, so you can get a steady shot. I wish it had a 1 second timer shot. Taking photos indoors without flash light requires very steady hand. Pushing the button will shake the camera and cause a blurry image, which can be overcome by timer shot - but only has 10 second delay.
Problems: The main issue that I got annoyed was the red. No matter how much I played with the white-balance settings, I could not get the bright "Ferrari" red. They all turn out as "watermelon" red. Often I have to adjust the colours using Photoshop to get the real red.
Opinion: Great value for the money at the time. I paid about $127 after rebate in Nov 2005. It's a decent camera at best. I'm not extremely happy with the picture quality of it. I have lot's of problems with blurriness. Not great for indoor events like weddings. None of the settings took a good picture. Lots of features and image modes. zoom is okay.
Opinion: have this camera for over 2 years, takes great pictures
the video is great but there is a background noise im told can be changed paid 300 when bought it see the price has not dropped at all testament to quiality camera
Problems: there is lag writing because of the preview best thing to do is shut down lcd to get around if there is another way to do it would like to hear from you
Opinion: Loved this camera when I bought it in December of 2004. It is very easy to use and the picture quality is very good.
Problems: Six months after I purchased the camera it gave me a 'lens error' message and I had to send it back to the manufacturer in California to get it repaired. It was still under warranty and the process of getting it repaired was fairly simple and quick. It worked fine until January of this year (2006) - only one month after the warranty expired. It again gave me the 'lens error' message. I shipped it back to the manufacturer in California and was told it would cost over $150 to have it repaired. After having the same error twice I am very hesitant to spend this much money to have it repaired so instead I will be looking for a new camera.
Opinion: This is a premium compact camera with modest resolution that seems to have sold poorly because the market prefers cheap, mediocre cameras with tremendous resolution. I happened to get this for a very reasonable price, but I'd still be happy with it if I'd payed twice as much.
I rarely make prints from my digital pictures and I've never made an enormous enlargement, so the resolution is more than adequate. After resampling images to fit my monitor, the image quality and low noise make the pictures look great - essentially on par with samples from the Canon S70, for example.
Lens performance is excellent with almost no purple fringing or other annoying artifacts. Image processing is conservative - contrast, sharpness, and colours aren't over the top and can be post-processed to taste. Only sharpness can be modified in-camera, which is unfortunate.
Video quality is excelllent, but you'll need a large, fast card to prevent the highest quality videos from terminating quickly as they fill the buffer.
Construction quality would have rated an easy 5 if not for the battery and card cover - it's holding up fine, but feels of lesser quality than the rest of the camera.
To summarize, I feel that most cameras are like muscle cars. Muscle cars put out tremendous power, but had terrible handling. Most compact cameras have tremendous resolution, but are let down by their optics and image processing. The 3700 is nicely balanced in this way, producing excellent images in a nice package. If you shop carefully, you might be able to find it for well under $200.
Problems: White balance is unreliable with the flash unless you set it to "speedlight" (i.e. flash). Manually metered white balancing is a welcome and effective feature (except when using the flash).
As is typical with point-and-shoots, low light autofocus is inconsistent.
Flash mode settings are lost as you change shooting modes, but they can be set extremely quickly.
Autofocus motor is audible in videos unless you choose single-focus mode.
Battery life isn't great for a modestly sized LCD, but spare batteries can be found for $10 or less on ebay.
The LCD is small by 2006 standards, but it has excellent clarity and response time...which is a good thing when the viewfinder is so poor.
Opinion: I didn't own this camear, but recommended my sister as well my friend to buy it.
I think this cameara has a manufacturer defect! Both my sister and my friend one give problem just after the warranty period, i.e. 1 year 4 months and 1 year 8 months respectively. Both give the same problem, LENS ERORR! My another friend that own this camera is very lucky since the problem occurs under warranty period. He got repair for free and no problem till now... I sent the camera to Nikon Malaysia for checking, they wanted to charge me for RM320(about US$85) which I think not worth it. So people own this camera, pls be aware....
