Minolta DiMAGE A1

Previous camera was a DiMage 5, which I liked very much, but which had obvious bugs. This A1 seems to have fixed the bugs in its predecessor and is actually easier to use. Battery life much better; autofocus a bit better; controls a bit more intuitive; resolution obviously better but that was not an issue. Well... I waited A LONG TIME to by a decent digital camera. I waited for what seemed like FOREVER until I saw some prices go WAY down on some relatively high quality cameras, then I decided to buy. I bought my A1 on February 14th 2004. I like it a lot! All controls are well laid out and easy to reach. The picture quality is excellent. The battery life is incredible. I have taken five hundred shots with flash (trying to capture the elusive "perfect water drop") without getting a low battery warning!!! Problems: None

I've had my A1 for a little under a year. It was the best camera on the market, in the prosumer category. At least until the A2 came along. The Ax series cameras are quite simply a whole lot of cameras for the price. Great job K-M! Problems: None.

This camera is unbelievable! Tons of features, a lot of manual settings are available... True colors, sharp images, fast focus. I'm speachless. Problems: Believe me, I've found no problems!!!!! Maybe... but MAYBE focusing on the night. But if you know how to find contrast areas (even little ones) you will be able to manage it.

The cameras only neet function is the antishake but this dose not give this camera a great value for the money. Problems: Noise in pictures on 100 ISO and good lighting. Hard to get focus to lock correct.

Got the A1 in March and have shot in many contitions. But just simply put, because of the availability of controls, programmable, manual and auto, the A1 is a tool and a companion. Fast start-up and AF, though it is easily confused in busy BG situations. Some have dissed the multi-shot mode but the real secret you don't often read is that in RAW, the A1 will capture 5 shots instead of 3. This is my 2nd A1; the first was stolen in Paris, after 2 weeks of shooting museum photos in London and Paris for a new book. At first I was inclined to "move up," either to the A2 or the Nikon N70. But I decided on the A1: * I'll never buy another camera without anti-shake/vibration reduction. My co-author shot his Canon A80 in the museums (Louvre, Brit. It's a good camera, easy to use with some interesting features. Problems: When the lens is set to 28mm (35 mmequiv) there is a coma shape shadow, this does not happen in focal distances above 50mm. Long exposures (above 8 seconds) will deliver some weird pixel formation in the image. If any other user had noticed it too I'd apreciate to read further comments

I bought my A1 in January and now shot something like 1800 pic's. Quite happy so far, my first digital was a Sony, and the difference is large. Battery lenght is good, (th BP-400 is great.) I shoot animals for the most and sometimnes the noise is bad. Anything above ISO 100 is crap. The "lid" over the USB is terrible.
