The Easyshare Z8612 IS offers a 12X optically stabilized zoom, a fair degree of manual control and an 8.1 megapixel sensor all wrapped up in a fairly compact body at a very attractive price point. The design is a bit 'love it or hate it', but for a budget model it's surprisingly well put together, handling is pretty good and the user interface is actually very nice. Unfortunately image quality problems and sluggish performance mean that it's hard to give it an unreserved recommendation.

Opinion: good build quality, good image quality, excellent power options, good features, almost my ideal cam.
Problems: flash pops up all the time, if you dont take lens cap off lens will move out and push cap off at power on, when batteries low unit just shuts off, no warning.
Opinion: Outstanding picture quality for a camera that has a $159 price tag USD.
12 X optical zoom and anti-shake are outstanding on this camera.
All pictures expose well outside and the camera has more than enough features to make it a simple P&S or use with full manual control.
Problems: Flash pops up at power on. Simply push it down if you don't wish to utilize.
Opinion: Fast focus. Responsive operation. Video quality is quite good. Love its low-key appearance and design.
International Consumer Research & Testing had this camera tested in Germany and gave its battery performance just one-star out of five.
Opinion: A great camera. Photos of a quality far above the Canon PowerShot S5 IS. I recommended with KLIC-8000 batteries.
Problems: A little slow.
Lack of manual focus.
