Opinion: I've had this camera since 2006 and have loved it! It's only 5MP but it reproduces colors better that my wife's 14MP Panasonic. I am looking to move up to a DSLR (probably a Canon), but I won't give this one up yet. The only two issues I have with the camera are:
1 - It's SLOW to write images to the memory card (looks like the same issue with the new Z990 as well). You can't do anything while it's writing. I have lost some opportunities just waiting for it to complete.
2 - I must say that this camera sucks in low-light conditions. There's so much noise in the shots that they are just no good to me (hence the reason I want to move up to a Canon DSLR).

Problems: Slow write speeds.
Poor low-light performance

Opinion: This is my actual camera, from january 2006.

I've taken all kind of photos and I'm pride of my photos, which means that the camera respond to what I want. (Easy to use 5 stars)

There are also some features everybody must know about this camera.

1.- There is an adaptor ring (from 45.5mm to 55mm, wich allows to mount a wide angle lens, filters... and you'll build another camera (Value for money 5 stars)

2.- Its aperture range goes from 2.8 to 8! (Look for modern compact wich goes over 5), so Z740 offers a deeper field than others. (Image quality 5 stars)

3.- In 4 years (next 14 of january 2010) it hasn't broken down, all buttons work fine, even the joystick and the flash. (So Construction 5 stars)

I'm a novice photographer, I want say if the camera is good or not, but here you can see some of the photos taken with a Z740. And remember I'm a novice, sure in professional hands it will work better.

Problems: It hasn't manual focus (half star less in features)

It hasn't image stabilization (half star less in features)

That's all

Opinion: One of those rare combinations of lens, sensor, and processsor that trancends the camera specs.

Opinion: I absolutely love this camera. So much so that I will stick to Kodak for Digital - just bought the Z712. I do alot of nature photography, and do alot of that via boat. I'm moving most of the time, and this camera has been wonderful for what I do. The action mode is the best for almost any situatiom. Whether it be for the movement of your subject, or your movement when trying to take a pic. Nothing but good to say about this camera. I will continue to use it as much as possible. The Z712 will be it's companion. Another great camera that I will give a positive review for when they get around to posting the camera on here.

Problems: None.

Opinion: Is despise too strong of a word ?
I bought this camera last year and regretted it almost immeadiately. I've only kept it because 1) the printer dock works very well, 2) I paid too much so need to live with it for now.
The lack of image stablization (IS) wasn't an apparent flaw until trying to take a picture while moving. The low light performance is terrible, even with the updated firmware. ISO 800 is possible if you drop the resolution down to 1.8Meg but the picture is terribly noisey. The focus hunts forever and >50% of pictures with subjects moving are blurry. If you want a camera to take sports pictures in a gym or rink, stay away from this camera. If you are taking scenery still photos, it might be OK if you don't zoom out, but then what use is the 10X zoom if not used ? If you're shooting video, you can't zoom in/out once recording has started. Focus doesnt seem to keep sharp while recording either.

In conclusion, if nothing else, I've learned what to look for in a decent camera after the last 1 1/2 years with the Z740. I only wish I had known about dpreview.com before buying it

Problems: Easyshare software periodically doesnt actually save pictures to PC destination folders during transfer process, it just deletes them from your camera so they're lost forever
EasyShare software slows PC (Core 2 Duo 2G RAM) to a crawl on startup while it scans your hard drive. (hint - disable it from startup using msconfig)

Indoor pictures (eg school gyms) very poor regardless of light type settings, auto setting, PASM settings,
Can't use in boat due to lack of IS
Focus hunts, often need to release shutter button and have it re-try focus before its actually in focus
Slow to write to SD card

The notes are not significant to date…

Problems: bientôt je vous dirais ce qui ne va pas... !

soon I would say to you what does not go…!

Opinion: I purchased this camera about 6 months ago, and this camera really kicked my hobbie of photography into gear. Overall, it takes great outdoor pictures and takes nice quality videos as well. A good begginers camera and automatic options are nice. Battery life also lasts a while as well. Macro mode is also nice on the camera.

Problems: 1) Autofocus on camera could be much better. When focusing on a certain object, it can be hard for the camera to identify the subject you want in focus.

2) Flash is weak, and when photograhphing indoors and in low-light conditions, it is a drag with the camera and pictures come out blurry sometimes.

3) Manual settings on camera are a little confusing and the camera booklet does a bad job explaining how to use them.

Opinion: I had got my Z740 last week, best price but not good image quality.don't think that's 5.0 million pixels DC ,just think that's 4.0 milion one, you will feel good.
you know, the price 149 pound, you can't get other new SLR-like DC better than this. good SLR-like DC for beginner.trust me ,if your beginner, you don't need pay double price to get canon S2 IS.

Problems: Dont suggest you use this DC in night.
I don't like the power switch.

Opinion: I got my camera about month ago and I have used it alot. It's so easy to use.I came on here to see the rating on this camera before I bought it. It does really good with low light I have no problems with it at all. If people would read the book that comes with it, it'll tell you how to work with low lights my pictures turns out excellent.

Problems: no problems at all.
