Opinion: I picked this camera up for the rugged features. And sure enough they came into play on the second time I had it in the field. The strap wasn't properly fastened and the unit fell from my neck and landed on very hard ground and rocks. Other than the case being dusty and a minor scratch on the rubber, no damage was done. Camera continued to perform as before.
The blues seem a little more saturated than my Nikon 990, but I seem to recall that being the case with all Kodaks I have tested.
Controls are large and easy to use even with gloves. Watertight design allows me to use it in the rain when some of the best hiking shots can taken.
Problems: Strap slippage when not properly put on. Lens cap seems to want to slip off too easy.
Wish it had an exposure setting up to 8 seconds like the DC260 and Nikon 9xx models.
Opinion: Great camera for outdoor activities. Used it while snowboarding in Austria: the camera can be easily handled with gloves. Rain, snow, dust, sand, nothing seems to be damaging to this camera. It has fallen a lot, even onto rocks and never got damaged.
Problems: It's a bit scary to carry a camera like this in your pocket as snowboarding means falling a lot (at least, for me). I don't like to land onto the huge lense.
It's not possible to copy images from the memory card into the camera memory in order to move pictures from one card to another.
Bit miraculous to see it comes with a 16 MB card while my camera had an 8 MB card. I use it now with an 48 MB card, and that's enough for about 120 pictures.
The lense cap won't stay on the lense when falling. You definately need to get some rubber lense cap for this camera (tip: go to some second hand camera store).
What adapter to use? Kodak, do tell us!
Due to the large size of the camera and the huge lense which scares me when snowboarding, I'll guess I'll exchange the camera with an Digital-Ixus after my backpack trip to Ireland this fall. I already have a full size camera (Canon EOS) and one is enough...
Opinion: Bought this to give one of our freelancers covering separatist violence in Sumatra. Main reason was for its construction and the 2.0 megapixel resolution is as good as the camera I use for work. Last year we bought a Coolpix 800 for similar use in East Timor, the camera was dropped once and it was broken.
Problems: Wish camera had a "slow shutter flash sync" mode, and wish that it had exposure readouts on the rear LCD screen. Also refresh rate of screen is slow and resolution is poor, unable to really tell if an image is sharp. Also wheel adjustment of screen brightness can give a false impression of your exposure -- is it over or under? etc.
Buffer seems to be small, after taking four pictures (camera responded quickly for those first four) takes a while to take subsequent frames.
Also wish camera was more clear in letting you know it was still writing, inadvertantly yanked a card out while it was still writing, the light is on the side of the camera. Maybe on the back by the viewfinder would be better.
Opinion: this camera was successful in it's rugged design, but I expected a lot better feature and ergonomics being that it is made by a true camera company. I was very excited to purchase this camera but was quickly disappointed because it's not an easy camera to use. The viewfinder is directly in center and therefore your nose ends up being squished into the LCD, which is small and almost useless. The pictures when reviewed seem blurred, although they are not when you see them much larger. When looking in the viewfinder the image also seems slightly blurry. The zoom button is stiff to the point that my thumb became sore and it seems backwards, it's T/W and W/T feels a better motion. I loved the animated menu writing, the color's used and descriptions. When trying to delete pictures you end up having to use both hands. The buttons along the bottom and the side are used in the deleting. It's too bad this unit is so heavy, really makes a difference if you end up using it all day. I found that the problems or quirks with this camera outweight the great ruggedness, not too mention the price is a bit steap even though Kodak just decreased it by 200.00. I wanted this camera bad but am sorely disappointed, especially compared to my HP618 that I have ended up with.
Problems: I couldn't get the pictures to be viewed on the TV. All specs said camera comes with 16mg card, but actually only an 8mg...Big difference.
