Opinion: I've had the pleasure to own the camera for a short period of time and have found that the camera does all its made out to do and does it well.
I've used cameras like the CP 990 and have done a comparison of the noise generated by the CP 990 and found that the Nikon's noise is higher at its lowest setting of 100 than that of the HP at iso 50. In fact, at iso 25 I believe the HP would have less problems with noise.
The dynamic range of the HP is pretty amazing and the shadow details are good. I shot a pic of the sky from the base of a building that was caught in the shadows and expecting to see either shadow details and a washed out sky or a nice blue sky but washed out building but was astonished to note that the exposure showed the nice sky and shadows areas were clear!
This is a very under-rated camera and is the closest thing to a digital SLR at a budget price. Other than for the battery life, I would recommend it wholeheartedly. I'm told if you're prepared to fork out extra money for the lithium batteries it will extend your shoot times quite a bit.
Problems: My only grouse is: with the LCD on, battery life is almost non-existent. Be prepared with several change of batteries for a shoot.
Opinion: Update to my previous opinion,Pentax were unable to fix the problem(probably lack of spare parts),so they replaced it with a Optio 550.
Higher spec than the EI-2000 but not as easy to use.
Shame that the EI-2000 broke!
Opinion: hi i bought this camera when it was stil a pantax , (and not HP becouse i hate!!!! HP they sel crap stuf printers and all !!! ) becouse my first 35 mm was a pentax..
i've got a minolta mirror reflecting aps sinds then , but if you take up to 1000 to 3000 pictures a year like me it becomes a bit expensive on film..
so i looked for 2 years and dicided that al digies were totaly crap...!! until i found this one on a deep dungion site of pantax... it was not , and has not been in any shops here ... i feel becouse it is the most exelant camera for i'ts price and it would totaly stop sails of any so caled digi camera's..
2 weeks after i saw it on saile in MAKRO and bought it...
i's now 2 years later and i shot about 4000 photo's of which i kept 3000....
i read the complants here and i think you al are mad...
if you hear my storie youd want 1...
i'ts the most friendly camera out there , it is simple 2 use no big hidden menu's or tiny buttons...
has a good grip , is a bit big but i like that in a camera ( just like a good woman you have something 2 hold on 2)
i'ts a true mirror reflecting camera , has al the same manual and outo settings that come on al 35mm and aps (normal and mirror reflecting) camera's...withe 1 extra , that you have 1 setting on a wheel for your own settings....
switching between you own settings and pentax his is ony 10sec max...!! trie that on a nother digi...!!!
it has a tilting screen so it can be any tipe of camera..
(like hassablad look in from the top , and alike )
i could not live without it !!!
i tried finding bettre ones but for this price there is no better one !!! even the new HP is crapper...!!!
it is in the same groupe as the cannon eos only it has no removeble lens and ony 2.something megapixels...
it compensates good the big chip and the 2.something megapixels give as good a picture as a sony with 4 megapixels....!!!
more camera's should be like this 1 and its the best thing you'l eaver buy for this price...!!!
Now here comes the best bit....
the people how complan that its broke and stuf...
now listen 2 this...
I'm normaly caring about my stuf , but i was taking pictures of trains beside a dich , had it on a 3 pod , was very stady , but neaded 2 have a pee... so when i came back some younsters pushed it over by mistake... it was lieing underwater for 5 minutes and ful of water !!!
i felt dead , i'd idmadgied me finding 1 like it , it was hel....
the thing is i let the water dry out over 1 week ontop of my fridge , and the thing stil takes pitures like nothing has hapend...!!!! even my compact flash card is stil oke !!! and al the photographes on there...!!!
the only thing you see is 2 white dots on my lcd where the water was...
if your camera can do this and stil live and it's not a underwater camera tel me becouse i want 1 hihih ... !!
the thing workes fine no damage done...stil exalent pictures... !!!
In short , you won't find something better for the price for what it is...!! exalent starter you won't regret it...!!
could tel you more but it's endles!!!! Just buy one .....
TIPS :
-1st get a 128mb compactflash or bigger !!! , it comes with 16 mb but you can shoot ful tiff ( 6 to 7 mb per picture ) so why limit yourself to smal crap pictures... !!!!!
- put the display on 1 sec so after taking a photo you se the picture displayd and than of... its saves batery..
if you do this you can shoot on an full 128mb compact flash on best jpg setting without flash ( best after tif )
-buy the lithium batery it's worth it !!! penlites are crap !!!
-put a mat filter on non polerized it protects your lens against damage !!!! then you don't have 2 put the cover on...!!!
-put it on iso 200 its the best setting for 90% of your pictures...!!
Problems: - i wish i could change lenzis...!!!
- no suncap!!
- no clip for the covers !!!
- getting extra's is hel takes 2 mothes , so buy eaverthing you want in 1 go !!!
- HP service is crap !!!!
- slow in the dark...
- the mini flash is not good for dark pictures in big buildings , then put a bigger flash on the hot shoe..
- i whis it had night vision than it would be complete...
- bit big...
Opinion: I purchased a Pentax EI2000(same as HP C912) from Dabs a few months ago and was quite happy with it,feels and handles like an SLR.Good value for money.Nice bright colours and good definition if centre weighted focus is used.Battery life ok if I use the lithium battery provided and keep the lcd screen turned off.
Problems: Had to send it back under warranty when it failed to power up.Now its spent the last month sitting in the workshops waiting for parts to arrive from Japan.Could take weeks yet.Not good after sales service.
Opinion: Pray it never breaks! I do like the camera however it has broken and HP repair it off the wall. Only they can repair the camera. I.E. they will not sell parts to anyone! On top of that they will not even fix a specific problem all they will do is swap cameras with you. So you send them yours and $250 and you get a refurbished unit. Thats a rip if you ask me
Problems: camera no longer saves images to memory card. LCD screen will kill fresh batteries in 30 sec.
Opinion: I had a Kodak DC290 and DC5000 before and the pictures were better color then the HP, the overall prints were better on the Kodak even at a lower resolution.
Nice things I liked about the HP
LCD flip
true reflex viewer
the standard screw on for filters
Manual settings
Things I did not like
It was fragile
Battery life was low
The colors were not very good
I sold it after 3 weeks...
I now have a Nikon Coolpix 5700.
Problems: Battery life was low even when using Ni-Mh
Opinion: I have been a professional photographer for 14 years and I bought the 912 camera for my work and have not been more pleased with the workmanship and simplicity of this camera. as long as you know somewhat of what you are doing you can master this camera in under 30 days i was able to master it in 3 days but that is my profession.
Problems: no problem as of this date.
Opinion: I have not mastered this camera yet but mostly I am happy with its performance. I bought it for the manual features and especially for the TTL viewfinder. I have not really used the fully manual features because I have forgotten a lot of what I learned in my photog classes, but I like the flexibility of the aperture/shutter priorities and white balance. I take pictures of flowers and especially appreciate the macro feature although I would prefer a sharper picture. Overall, a good buy.
Problems: I have experienced the 'lockup' but, after reading some of the reviews, now know how to unlock the camera (remove the batteries).
I don't like the 'soft' focus. My flower pics don't have the sharpness I prefer.
