Opinion: Pros and Cons: Bought this camera due to rave reviews about its adaptive lighting feature and overall ease of use. The adaptive lighting really works, and I found it difficult to duplicate the results with other cameras using Photoshop (although outdoor shots were easier to match). It's at its strongest in indoor flash pictures, where the lighting in the image is nice and even compared to the dark backgrounds you get with other cameras. In outdoor shots, the difference is not as stark, although it did a good job of keeping highlights within range (but as with other cameras, you might need to use exposure compensation). The menus are simple and easy, the fit and finish is solid, and the price for a 6MP camera can't be beat.

Problems: The lens was simply average. Comparing the R717 with my Casio 6MP (w/Canon lens), the images were slightly softer, less detailed, and there was more pronounced barrel distortion at wide angle (even at a modest 39mm). PP sharpening tools did not help much. Softness was particularly evident on the top edge of the frame. I don't know if I got a flawed unit, but ultimately I took it back, feeling that my existing Casio was slightly better overall. HP does deserve credit for the innovative adaptive lighting and the low price. If I took indoor photos exclusively and wanted printable shots right out of the camera without post-processing, I would have kept the HP.

Opinion: its wonderfull for a light weight and every day use camera but 1st it requires some tweeking with the lighting and the sharpness to produce realy good images, also the adptive lighting option is realy great, just for others to notice, dont use the the default setting , you have to tweek the setting a little bit to get best quality and the save it as (my mode)... realy nice.

Problems: 1. it takes sometimes realy long time for expousre processing and writing images to memory which waste alot of time, other than that i think its very good.

2. also focus problems specialy when in low light conditions.

Opinion: Bought this camera in Aug. 2005 at the HP online store because it had quite good reviews and the "value for money" seemed to be excelent. The picture quality is very good, haven't experienced any problems there. Battery life is not that great, being on vacation I charged the batteries almost every day so I don't run out of power when I need it...
After taking a picture with flash it takes a few seconds until the camera is ready for the next shoot.

Problems: Two problems with the camera. A "minor" problem is that it sometimes it shoots two pictures when I only want to take one. Couldn't figure out how to stop this.

A major problem is a software or hardware bug with the audio feature (you can add up to 60 seconds of audio to each picture). In some cases this audio feature starts unintentionally after a taking a photo. It's supposed to stop when releasing the shutter botton, but sometimes this doesn't work. Then the camera is locked for 60 seconds, not reacting to any buttons in that time. I got a replacement camera from HP but the same problem occured.

So right now I'm trying to get a refund from HP. But they rather want to exchange it with another R717 which is not what I want after two cameras had the same problem.
