The replacement for the near-legendary FinePix F31fd had some big boots to fill, and the FinePix F50fd suffers by comparison to its illustrious predecessor. That said it's a better designed camera offers superb image quality that puts it near the top of the compact camera tree, and it's fast and has a solid feature set. It's got a lot more competition than its predecessors, but the F50fd is still a camera worth consideration if image quality in all light conditions is a priority. Since replaced by the F60fd.

Opinion: Applause for introducing image stabilization in F serie.
But ...
Very disapointing, that megapixel race isn't over. This camera never needed 12 mpx. 6 mpx ir far enough. Squeezing more pixels into the sensor means there will be more noise.
I really wanted to say this very important issue, although I havent even touched this camera. I can give rating based on my experience with very succesfull F30.

Problems: Way too much megapixels. Useless. Resultin in worse image quality. Otherwise looks perfect on paper.

Opinion: Received the F50fd, I currently have the F31fd.
User navigation is improved with the jog wheel, which appears as wheel on LCD as a semi-circle. 2 custom settings on the jog wheel depending on your preference.

LCD is crisp and a a shiny polished surface on the screen.
Shutter lag is just as good, if not better than the F31fd. An extra image stabilisation button on the top right.

Battery charger a welcomed compact little external box that goes straight to the wall socket without wires.

Kudos to Fujifilm.

Opinion: Had the F50 for a few days now. First impressions are as follows:
The camera looks and feels very good. Solid build, nice screen, focus’s well.
Much nicer than the F30 top marks Fuji

Problems: The picture quality is a bit noisy at 12 Mp even at 100 ISO.
Slightly better at 6 Mp
Pity there is a setting for 6 Mp and Fine Quality only Normal
Pictures are slightly bleached not vibrant colours.
Bit in its defence I’ve only had it for a few days and I still need to play with it

Opinion: After using the finepix A800 (8 megapixel entry level camera) for a couple of months and impresed of its image quality, I decided to buy the F31 for its manual controls and its suberb image quality. Unfortunately I was a little late, so I am a proud owner of a F50fd, since yesterday. As an experienced amateur, I noticed immediately, that this camera shows more noise than the A800 and it is quiet annoying already from ISO 400. This camera is great in construction and features and -as far i played with it one day long- it is very satisfactory for a sub compact but -unfortunately- far away for being "low noise". Of course, there is much to do for evaluating the pros and cons of this piece of enginneering. I definitely would prefer it to be 7 to 8 megapixels.
Generally, I am happy with this camera, but certainly not for its image quality at 400 ISO and above.

Update:

In most modes -if not all, except night shooting- low shutter speed is limited to 1/4 sec. Good bye long exposure shots !! In the night shot mode, the only available apperture is fully opened i.e 2.8 in wide and 5,0 in tele.
The camera does well on auto ISO selection, so the "Auto" ISO selection in many modes, is not a serious problem.

Problems: I d like to see the "fine" compression on all resolutions -in a firmware update-, especially the ones of 3:2 and 6 megapixels.
The double-beep for confirming the correct focus is turned off with the shutter sound and not the general operation sound, where it belongs to.
