Opinion: 'Oil' smudges on interior of lens: Have had the camera for 2 years. Dropped a couple times with no problems. However recently pictures have been displaying smudges - like oil on lens. I have cleaned exterior of lens with no change - so it appears to be coming from inside camera. Strange thing is - when shooting I can not see the smudges, but once I have taken photo I can see in camera display & when downloaded. So maybe not a lens issue. Bummer...

Problems: Internal 'oil' on lens.

Opinion: Love this camera! A classic.

Still the best compact I own. Beautiful tone and color in the output. It just enhances reality. Even flaws like purple-fringing and lens-flare somehow come out looking great from this camera. Still outperforms my F200exr in image quality nearly any light.

Problems: Not the best environmental sealing. Somehow got one strand of lint inside the lens that bonded onto the sensor-- had to perform delicate repair surgery. After repair, photo quality is still great.

Opinion: Hi there...
I own this little cam since summer 2007 and I can honestly say "wow!"
It's small: you can use it everywhere without problems.
It has great high ISO performance: you can use it all day and night long.
It has some nice manual control: you can learn about photograpy and find your way out..
It has great colour rendition.

Someone says there are better options for daylight photography. More zoom, more speed... maybe. But if you're looking for the highest image quality in a (really!)pocket body, the f31fd is a top model.

I own also a Panasonic FZ8 and a Nikon D40.

The Pan is enjoable: it has a long zoom and easy to use manual controls. But noise is a big problem even at base ISO.

The Nikon D40 has great image quality... and I use to learn more and more...
But in the end I love my Fujifilm. It's really close to Nikon in terms of image quality, but - due to it's small size - I can take it everywhere I go.

The better cam is the one you use all the times!

Problems: No problems.
But use the manual settings for the best results.

Opinion: A classic! One of the most sought-after cameras, with pretty high second hand value.
And there is a good reason for that.

It is something as uncommon as a pocketable low light camera, and perhaps the
best ever made. I have been told Fuji's later models are not as good, trading low
noise and image quality for more resolution. At 6 Mp, the resolution is more than
enough.

The top feature of the camera is the low noise, making ISO 800 perfectly fine, and
ISO 1600 fairly usable, while most other cameras canät go higher than ISO 200
without ruining the image in noise. I mostly use the camera in "Auto 800".

The "face detection" feature, however, is little more than a toy. I rarely use it. The
movie mode, however, is excellent and is frequently used.

Problems: The autofocus is pretty slow, at least compared to my Ricoh's. I have also noticed signs
of over-processing in dark areas, but it is hard to reproduce.

Usage is OK, but not first rate. I find my self making mistakes too often.

In good light, the camera can not compete with a Ricoh for features (wide angle, zoom,
etc). In low light, however, it is a winner.

Opinion: Great i love it the reason i carry a camera is to capture memories at thier best. While i would love to always have my DSRL in hand; it is not aways possible sneak in! This camera is definatly the next best thing to taking the SLR. I have tried the sd950is and after a trip to the water park with family i got rid of it. The pictures just sucked! I now carry the f31fd all the time.

Problems: I think it pushes up the ISO een when it does not need to and in full auto mode it leave a little to be desired but it is a point and shoot and in my opinion it does better that the rest.

Opinion: Had the F31 for 8-9 months now. After the initial honeymoon period of the first 3 months, put it down and went onto other cameras. Have now come back to it and wondered why I ever left -
Eminently pocketable;
Solidly built;
Super start up times;
That sensor! Good daytime IQ with great dynamic range, and unbeatable low light IQ w usable ISO 1600;
A fine lens with no distortion and good edge to edge sharpness;
Powerful flash;
Useful face detection (can be skittish though);
Useful manual controls;
Amazing battery life.

Am sure other reviews have already mentioned all/more of the above, but I flatter myself with the thought that the more voices that are raised for Fuji (or another brand) to build a cam that truly inherits the F31 crown now that they've stopped making it, the more likely they will actually take heed and make one.

Problems: No image stabilisation means the cam is always pushing up the ISO;
ISO on auto also very trigger happy - any excuse it seems to go up a notch;
Walkabout videoing ruined by mechanical noise from within lens;
Slightly fiddly menu;
Can't believe they've discontinued it - no other compact they or anybody else has made since is as good in low light (though am waiting with anticipation the review for the f100fd to see if they've managed to make magic, albeit w 12m pixels on a 1/1.6" sensor...).

Opinion: Highly recommended. The standard by which all point-and-shoot cameras are judged. The high ISO quality has greatly surpassed all other cameras in it's class. The high ISO performance is so good it has been compared to DSLRs here on DPReview in it's camera reviews. Battery life is also second to none in it's class. I've had over 500 shots on a single charge and there was still plenty of "juice" left (even with considerable flash shots).

Has decent manual controls but could be better. Has a usable ISO 1600.

Problems: Uses slow and proprietary xD memory and no image stabilizer. Flash quality, as with all P&S, is very mediocre. Flash use however, is not needed as often due to the excellent high ISO performance unlike other cameras in it's class.

Worst of all it's not being made anymore and sells for a considerable amount on eBay.
