Opinion: Initially I purchased a samsung 2.1 mp camera which was high on features and gave reasonable quality pictures. However, its' power consumption was excessive even with nmh 1700 batteries. I decided to return the camera, spend a bit more and bought the finepix a303. The camera only uses two aa batteries compared to the samsung using four, but lasts twice as long; good for 200 plus photos. I have no problem with the quality of the pictures and find the auto mode extremely good when used with a bit of practice with spot metering. The other point that shines with this camera is the speed it takes photos once focus has been established, much quicker than the samsung, which means you don't lose the "moment". The compact size together with the simpicity of point and shoot make this a truly excellent camera. The lens is prtected by an automatic shutter that opens when the camera is turned on in shooting mode; no fiddly lens cap to worry about. The new XD media card is minute and data transfer seems extremely fast. Given that I read a claim of 8 gig cards coming soon (slightly sceptical about that !) storage space should never be a problem. There are higher featured cameras out there, but as far as quality and value for money go, I recommend this camera. For the serious amatuer/professional this may not be the camera for you, but for the average amateur that wants a compact camera that takes great pictures without having to spend time messing about with copious menus of manual settings, then this is the perfect camera. The manual settings include five flash modes, ev compensation and a handfull of white balance settings.
Problems: There is no video out, so you can't play stills direct to a tv monitor. This may or may not be a problem to you, but you have the option of making a vcd and playing through a dvd (as you would with any camera), this way you chose your slide show. The body of the camera is very smooth and due to its' size makes it easier to accidently drop, unlike a camera with more angular physical features.(I dropped mine on some granite rocks with no damage to the camera other that a scratch on the body, a testament to the build quality of the camera). I couldn't find a dedicated case for the camera, but I have found one now, for under £10, called an Oyster7000. This soft case is very well padded, with a large pocket at the front that takes four aa size batteries and a spare card (in a metal compact case), This makes for a nice compact and well protected carrycase.
Opinion: This camera is a step backwards from my 2600z image not so good unable to focus in moderate light resulting in blurred images.
Construction is very cheap plastic, very disappointed with Fuji as I always had good results.
This A303 is going back might get the 3800z instead
Problems: Poor images in moderate light conditons , good micro though, very cheap plastic.
Opinion: took mine back to best buy after a week takiing mostly indoor pictures i think the weakness was an iso 100 for indoor pictures which is where i'll use this camera the most taking pictures of my 6 month old baby girl have a olympus c3000 a little to big to carry around all the time wanted something smaller liked everything about it but picture color quality an fuji a303 was using flash 100% of the time in living room her cloths were lavender with purple socks fuji pictures looked to dark socks were pure blue and lavender was more blue than lavender but olympus c3000 was dead on colors and speed of recharging flash and write to card were much faster in the olympus even with 64mb xd card in fuji, also crashed computer running windows me because no card reader avail. on backorder hook to computer soon as camera turned on computer would crash had to down load pictures into old computer running windows 98 into my old smartmedia card and transfer them into my compac P3 1000 mhz because thats what ptinter was hooked to picture color off on screen and even worse when printed on canon 8200 on high res paper, liked using AA batteries have 5 set laying around but growled about buying more memory cards have lots of those already and small size good just wasn't happy with picture color reproduction took it back.
Problems: just crashing computer trying to download from camera because card reader not available yet on back order have already a couple card readers laying around and at $79 a little steep to
Opinion: Brought it back to best buy too.
Problems: I bought this camera because I liked the styling and the 3.2 MPixel.
I soon found out that it has very limited features. The slowest shutterspeed is only 1/2 sec and the autofocus has proplems focusing in low light. There is no infinity focus setting either...this makes it impossiple to take nightshots. I take a lot of pictures in the 'twilight'...so this camera wasn't for me. (should have done some research before)
Takes great pictures though in average use. Very good colour balance. If it would have more manual controls it would be perfect.
