Once my monitor was calibrated (using a Spyder 3 Express) results using Epson Gloss & Matte 4-star or better paper produced really beautiful results. Haven't tried alternative papers yet but plan to do so at some point. The 'best print' setting prevent banding which is evident (but not wholly unacceptable) with the lower quality print settings (print settings are handled through LR 3.6 + the printer). I'm really happy after using this printer for several months, it's working quite well more ...

I recently picked up a used R1900 for a very reasonable $175 including about 10 ink cartridges. After downloading drivers and print utilities the printer install on my Win7 machine went smoothly. I did not have any Epson paper handy, so I used some Kodak premium glossy. The first prints were very nice even without a profile in place. This printer gives perfect results after the professional calibration for Ilford Galerie Smooth Gloss Papers and Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk Papers. The results are clearly better than the results on any Epson paper. Now I have finally authentic colors, brightness and contrast, incredible conformity with EIZO S2000 monitor. Problems: Desaturated colors without calibration, even original icc profiles for Epson papers are not good.

I have this printer and it's great. Once you get the profile for the paper of your choice and profile the printer it produces great prints. I only wish it was a larger format like 17x22. I can't afford the 3880 or 4900 but this one is working great for now.
