Canon EOS 550D (EOS Rebel T2i / EOS Kiss X4)

The 550D uses a new, 18.7 (total) megapixel sensor that's similar, but not exactly the same as the one featured in the EOS 7D. Also central to the impressive specification of the EOS 550D is a high-spec movie mode which offers full HD capture at up to 30 fps, manual control over exposure, and the option to use an external stereo microphone. The new camera also inherits the EOS 7D's sophisticated metering system. Canon has pulled out all the stops with the EOS 550D and produced the most highly-specced Rebel we've ever seen.

This 18 Megapixel camera features excellent photo quality (even at high ISOs), a compact, well-designed body, a gorgeous 3-inch LCD display, snappy performance, and a Full HD movie mode. There aren't many downsides: Images are on the soft side, especially if you're using an inexpensive lens....

There aren't many downsides: Images are on the soft side, especially if you're using an inexpensive lens. Redeye is a problem, and there's no tool to remove it in playback mode. The continuous shooting mode could be better and, like other D-SLRs, contrast detect autofocus in live view mode is sluggish.

Canon's EOS 550D / Rebel T2i is a very impressive DSLR which redefines what we can expect from the upper entry-level category. Just five months on from the high-end EOS 7D, the EOS 550D / T2i delivers essentially the same image quality and flexible movie modes at half the price. Sure the EOS 550D / T2i doesn't share the build quality, speed and handling of the EOS 7D, but with 18 Megapixels and HD video at a choice of frame rates and sizes, it's a powerful camera for the price.
