Opinion: Not a bad camera but Pentax cameras were a revelation to me in their use. I was disappointed with the ergonomics and the lack of some features. Picture quality was also a letdown for the price paid. Nikon had the D90 and that's what I was looking at.

Problems: No major problems beside not being competitive.

Opinion: One fantastic camera! I've used Canon SLR's since the 20D. To see the improvement over the years has been great. The 50D is an all round great SLR even after 3 years of use. As long as you don't need HD video, this is one of the best SLR cameras out there for the price!

Opinion: Yes I have taken over one hundred thousand shots with my two. 50D s and like them a great deal.
I never feel inadequate when I see much more expensive cameras in use. My 50d's get the job done well.
My 40 D was an enjoyable camera but not as good as the 50D ! So I swapped it for a 50 D giving me a brace of em.
The 50D s are reliable and professional in every way.
The only upgrade they benefit from is a grid screen.
My very experienced photographer friend owns a 7D and a 5D mk 2 as well as all the best L lenses. My images
apparently meet every criteria he has and he would know.
That is not to say a pixel peeper will be delighted when side by side with D700 Nikon in poor light but I regularly create interesting images at 1600 and if necessary 3200 iso. I don't hesitate I wind it in and take pleasing shots.
I agree that IQ is important but that must be taken in consideration with the subject matter. Right ?
The 50D is a very fine photographic instrument and I am not clammering to buy full frame or 7D because there is no need to. I bought a Tamron 70-300 VC lens recently and now the IQ is even better than with my trusty 55-250 IS Canon.
At the end of the day I feel priveleged to be using such wonderful equipment that I could only dream about a few years ago.

Problems: They went out of production.

Opinion: I upgraded from the 20D a while ago and after using this camera for a while now i can say that it is a very impressive camera even at high iso levels i just recently had a photo printed 16 X 24 at 3200 on a metalic print with no visible noise.

Problems: None so far most problems are the user not the camera

Opinion: The 50D is one of my favorites, and destine to be a Canon classic. Canon has taken all they have learned from the 20D, 30D, and 40D and created a more refined instrument in the 50D. I have had the camera for several months, and it has yet to disappoint me. The images are super clean, and the color spectrum is stunning. This particular sensor is capable of making very clean images up to at least 1600 iso. I routinely shoot images at 800 iso, without issues. I love this camera.

Problems: I have occassionally had error messages that require me to turn the camera off and then restart. No real explanation of why.

Opinion: Very nice camera with great IQ and overall handling.
The AF adjustment is a real good feauture and helps winning sharpness if your lens has some misfocussing which is very often the case , also in L lenses.
Noise is no issue , very good at 800 iso and with the improved noisefilter set to `strong` also 1600 is usable.
Lighting optimizer for highlights and shadows working very well.
Much higher pro feel compared to f.e. Nikon D90.
`feel` in your hands is fantastic.

Problems: Batterylife

Opinion: IT'S LIKE THIS:

If you buy a 50D and it's not knock-down (!)ing AWESOME, take it back and exchange it. In my experience canon's q/c is very poor, bordering on non-existent. From what I read, there are some bad copies around.

Be sure it's the body and not the lens...

Is the cam noisy? Hmm. How to define noisy? Any of you kids ever use film? By that standard, the cam is nearly niose-LESS! Sure, there can be noise. You can pay $4,000 and up for a cam with less noise... I can be rid of the noise I find, when I find it. So can you.

The "aps-c" size sensor, well, it's a gold mine. Buy a 300mm lens, get a 450mm lens! All the lenses are deficient at the edges, so the sensor cuts off the edges! Mine works amazingly well and I have yet to see any more degradation, due to diffraction, than with any other cam (notably 20, 30 and 40D). Sometimes I shoot at f-22, to get the depth of field.

I'm through upgrading. I now have 2 50D bodies. I'll use them until they die, or I do. I could ask for nothing more. Dead serious.

Problems: Yeah - too many GIZMOZ.. er, excuse me, "features."

It would be really easy to go into the menus, not knowing what you were doing, and render the cam almost horrible, in terms of picture quality! Maybe that's what some of the people that slam this cam have done - rofl.

Picture Styles? NOT! Buy a point and shoot. The cam tries to be all things, to all people, resulting in something that's a morass of complexity, due to all the garbage it has to haul. I think it should be customized to it's target audience, leaving grandma behind...
