Opinion: Solid construction (magnesium alloy covers), light weight, fast burst rate (6 fps), extremely durable shutter, reliable autofocus, comfortable optical viewfinder, compatible with the same Sandisk Extreme compact flash cards I invested in in 2006, same control layout as my 5D, decent weather sealing, smaller than full frame form factor, nice high ISO performance to 800 (have used ISO 1600 with usable results in a pinch), optional grid screen for OVF (I use this accessary daily), optional battery grip (use daily), and great image quality too. The camera has all the features that are important to me. I've been trying to convince myself to upgrade to the 7D, but so far, I don't have any good reason to. If you can find a 40D (or even the 50D) body, buy it. It's a steal.
Opinion: This is the fastest camera I have ever owned.
I sold only because I wanted to move to full frame
Opinion: I bought it just before the 50d arrived, so I had a good deal. It's been nearly 3 years and it's still a pleasure.
Pictures are great, ergonomics are perfect, it's solid and well built and black!
I love black cameras. Specially black "metal" cameras and this one is very black and full metal, which is good.
Once, I had a bird shitting on it in Washington (true, in Georgetown, in a little garden). That's the biggest problem with black metal cameras, white bird shit shows like crazy on it, and it's impossible to clean completely (it goes in the recesses) and now, my camera stinks when it's hot ...
I hate birds...
Opinion: I bought by ebay for 50% by one year old.
I do not need the contrast autofocus in liveview which have the 50d and 60d.
I love the up to 6pictures per second.
I love the 3 full custom settings memory with. E.g. I use for
A) black and white in high contrast
B) overexp with soft colors and contrast to do human portraits and baby photo
C) manual awb sunlight with 3shoot mode and +1/0/-1
Each in special af mode and focus selection and flash settings.
I love this machine, special the ergonomic aproach reached by canon,
Before i have had colani's designed t90.
Problems: No one
Opinion: This is the first DSLR that my family (mum, dad & siblings) has had. Personally it is great. We only have a small lense but it does the job. My grandmother has the 50D and my uncle has the 550D mark 2.
They are all great.
I am saving up for a camera and twin lense kit which is $899.00.
Problems: None
Opinion: Came from 20 and 30D's and like the 40D best. Tried 50 and 7D's but am more than content and still enthusiastic about my 40D and
it is uncomplicated and customizable enough for me while the newer
50 and 7D's wider feature sets aren't of much temptation to me and seem overly complicated. Only thing I'd wish for is the higher resolution of the newer generation LCDs.
Problems: I am still content with the 40D two years+ into ownership.
Opinion: I like this camera, bought it year ago, didn't like 50D. I think it is the best one among Canon xxD at the moment.
The good things are:
-high quality colorful and low-noise picture @ ISO 100-1600
-fast and precise AF
-good ergonomics (large viewfinder, handy controls)
What is lacking:
-handy Auto ISO (like in Nikons)
-AF fine tune (like in 50D)
-build-in flash as a wireless commander (like in 7D and Nikons)
Problems: none
Opinion: Great Camera. If I had to buy another without the new
7D or such I would buy this one all over again. Excellent
build and image quality, feature set that is more than
sufficient for enthusiasts like me or even professionals I
would think, great ergonomics. Fast AF and good speed
for action shots at 6fps.
Problems: Not a problem, but wish the LCD screen had better
resolution; wish there were more focus points with wider
distribution in addition to center-heavy.
Opinion: Excellent value for the money. This is extremely
responsive. I previously used a good EOS film body then
the 300D, then this. It is even faster than my film body.
Problems: With less than 9,000 shutter actuations, my camera
showed the dreaded "Error 99." It was 9 months out of
warranty, but meticulously cared for. Canon charged
$212 to fix it. I don't mind paying something to have it
fixed, but less than 9,000 on a shutter that is supposed
to have an average life of 100,000? They should have
thrown me a bone there somewhere.
