Canon EOS 400D (EOS Digital Rebel XTi / EOS Kiss Digital X)

Successor to the 350D, the EOS 400D (Rebel XTi) was another big seller for Canon, and can still be found on sale if you look hard enough. The headline changes - more megapixels, sensor cleaning, improved AF system and larger screen come along with a slew of smaller (but often significant) enhancements, but the truth is that for many the EOS 400D was a relatively disappointing upgrade to its hugely successful predecessor. Image quality is excellent, and the user interface improvements welcome, but the handling and feature set didn't (and still don't) compete that well with competitor models.

The Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi is a much more significant upgrade than anyone expected. Many believed it would simply follow in the same footsteps as the EOS 30D by sporting a bigger screen and Picture Styles, but keeping the same sensor as its predecessor. But while we did get the screen and Picture Styles, it was a surprise to also find a higher resolution sensor and a new active dust removal system.
Of course the new sensor allows the 400D / XTi to compete on a level playing field ...
