Canon EOS 350D (EOS Digital Rebel XT / EOS Kiss Digital N)

Opinion: Although this camera is now quite old, I'm writing this review to make a point about DSLRs....

I had one of these for my research, and it was great in that it was a very good quality DSLR that could be remotely operated by a computer. However, I was using a remotely-operated PowerShot S70 side-by-side with the 350D and the kit zoom lens, and the 7MP S70 out-resolved it by something like 20%! This shocked me, especially because the S70 has a collapsing lens, bringing serious doubts about construction tolerances. Both cameras were used in well-controlled optimal conditions, and I'm sure the 350D would have been much more tolerant of less-than-optimal conditions, but the disturbing truth was that the optics on Canon compacts were way better than the kit lens on their DSLRs.It is also true that various lens options probably would have brought the 350D a little past the S70 in IQ. Note that dpreview commonly tests DSLR resolution with prime "fast 50s" set to their optimal aperture, whereas compacts are tested with the lens they come with.

The 350D sensor and camera body are pretty good, if rather plastic. Operation is quite fast, high ISO performance is good, and images look very smooth (PP well).

Opinion: I did not like this camera and sold it after some month.

Opinion: a good modern improvement to the 300D (faster with more features), but the camera in itself is a little dull to use.

If you're coming from a non-DSLR, then it's absolutely fine...but for others used to DSLR's it's a fairly pointless option.

Opinion: My first SLR was the Canon EOS Rebel 2000. This took great film shots. My problem was getting the films developed. I decided to move to a DSLR. After long analysis, I chose the EOS 350D. I bought a bundle that had the battery grip (for extra battery charge and for taking vertical shots). This helped make the camera more substantial and easier to grip. I had the standard lens and a 55 to 200 telephoto. These served me quite well.
This camera takes great photo's and with the ability to take 1,000's of shots at no extra charge has helped me learn the art of photography.
I have no problems using this camera, and have now bought the Canon EF 28-300 f/3.5-5.6L IS USM "L" series lens and the Speedlite 580 EX II flash. This might sound extreme for a low end camera, but the camera takes great shots that have been recognised by professional photographers. I use this setup for sports, landscape, portrait & function photography.
I got the lens & flash with the forsight of getting the EOS 5D Mark II next year (when I can afford it), but I will keep the 350D as a great backup.

Opinion: My first digital-SLR after traditional SLRs. It is very easy to use, picture quality is amazing and colours very realistic. The rear colour-screen is small but leaves extra space for the LCD which is very useful. Battery life is excellent. Probably the construction is cheap with much plastic around but this makes the overall package a light thing to bring around.

Opinion: I bought one second hand 350D, with about 11000 shots. I like the pictures taken with Parameters 1, they are absolutely fantastic. Good contrast, sharpness and saturation. I like the good dynamic range too. Still a good camera, though we are in 2008.

Opinion: Excellent first DSLR camera. Upgraded from a G6 point and shoot. Rock bottom price for under $360 from a local store and is brand new. Using a 50mm f/1.8 and a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 lens. Learning so much in a short period of time. Can't believe I waited so long to get an SLR. Already want to get a full frame 5D in the next couple of years :)
