The 85L was a lens I lusted for over 3 years. I bought the 85 f1.8 which was (is) a great performer for the money. Certainly it is faster to focus, accurate, lighter and works decently on a range of Canon bodies. The 85L is none of these things. It is heavy, costly, only seems to work decently on pro bodies and is difficult to use at maximum aperture. Nevertheless, it is one of a kind. At nearly $2500, this is an expensive lens but worth every penny. Construction and optics are absolutely first rate. Images are tack-sharp. Bokeh is beautiful and creamy. It's a big lens and heavy but it's super fast and nice handling. AF is fairly slow but that's because the front element is a massive piece of glass and you're not going to shoot sports with this lens so AF is more than adequate. Is it a good value? Well, the 85mm f1.8 is about 1/3 it's price and very close to the 1.2's ...

Pros: Performance wide open (sharpness, color, contrast, bokeh...), image quality no matter the aperture. Cons: Quite expensive. Lazy AF. I was very happy with the Mark I version of this lens (apart from some lack of accuracy when focusing wide open and the well known AF slowness), but I had the chance to get a mint Mark II sample at a very sweet price and now I'm even happier, since AF is noticeably faster and I think that also more accurate.
