Good: (1) Dirt cheap (< $150 new) (2) Good IQ for the price (3) Decent construction (all plastic, which might bother some people--it doesn't bother me) (4) Light and small (5) Great range (6) IS is useful Not so good: (1) Slow and noisy autofocus--not optimal for randomly moving subjects, and forget about live view or video

Along with the 50mm f/1.8, the Canon 55-250 IS lens is the first lens that most photographers should consider when looking for a lens to add to the 18-55 lens which comes with most of the Rebel series DSLR cameras. At 250mm, this lens offers a fantastic 8x telephoto zoom. The Image Stabilization feature and light weight make this lens very practical for handheld shooting. It has been part of my camera bag for over five years. I especially enjoy bringing it to baseball games. I get great ...

As probably most of you, I was questioning the quality of this lens as for $160 or about not many options one has. Reading some reviews and listening to fellow photographers advice I decided to give a try. [ Many thanks to those who suggested this lens ! ] The glass is sharp ! Noticed some mild loss of this sharpness above 200-220mm, especially in low light but that was something I expected. Not much though, one can still make quite a decent shot even at full zoom if the light conditions are ...

This lens is sharp and clear throughout its range. IS is great too. Really good for wildlife. By far, this lens is the best in its category and price. Problems: I dont see much of a difference with its first version.

Great value lense, I bought on Amazon for £140, unbeatable at that price range, and actually great quality! I was surprised how much IS made a difference, in daylight, or cloudy weather, the full range of zoom gives great results. AF is fairly accurate. But in low light the full zoom is useless without a tripod. For Dusk/Night shooting, a tripod is almost essential. But with a bit of manual focus, still gets great results. Problems: Attached to my camera, it is now too long to fit in my case! ...

This is a great lens.It takes brilliant pictures and, unlike other reviews, this lens seems quite fast and accurate to auto-focus. It is light so it is easy to carry. The build is plastic but it is an extremely sturdy plastic so you get a real sense of good build when you use it. There is no lens creep either, even with wear!! The price for this is brilliant as you also get the in built IS which is a wonder! The only problem i have is that you can't put teleconvertors on it as it is an ef-s ...

wonderful price, especially refurb at $200. build quality is not bad, you get what you pay for. I found this lens great to about 30-40 ft but lacking beyond that. where this lens shined for me was insect shots. I focuses close and at 250mm makes for some great butterfly shots. I had a shot published with this lens. I had version I but I think the changes were cosmetic. get a hood, not included but not too expensive.
