I bought this camera because of glowing reviews in a number of respected magazines.  I can only think Canon is paying for these reviews. The basic problem, now very well documented by many users, is the battery.  It is not just that the battery has a short life.  There is something wrong with the software because the camera thinks that the battery needs charging--even when you have just charged it.  As a result, the camera shuts down.  You put a new charged battery in and it happens again. ...

I love my Canon XSi/Tamron 18-270mm zoom combination.  But it is rather large and heavy to carry around with me all the time.  So I went looking.  Bought another brand with reportedly great lens.  That was a disaster.  It lasted 15 months.   Next I did some research....found the this Canon SX280 HS on sale at a big-box store and bought it.  That was about 3 weeks ago.  It is great.  No battery problem.  It is a current enough version that the firm wear upgrade apparently had already been ...

The good: image quality is very good, the pictures are sharp and colors are nice. The bad: there is a huge battery problem and the firmware update didn't solve the problem. The camera shuts down after a few minutes of video taping, but also shuts down when using the zoom or just powering up to take a picture. On screen it says 'charge battery' but the battery is full and the indicator said full. You have to put in another battery or take the battery out, wait some minutes and put the same ...

Well folks, it looks like Canon has apparently discontinued this camera. I guess they can't fix the problems this camera has or they are just refusing to do so. Now truly the "HS" does stand for something. Thank you Canon for your wonderful customer support. I shall take this into very serious consideration when next I purchase a printer, camera, etc.

After reading about the battery issues, I called Canon, and got a bit of a runaround from the tech.  Still, the reports that the problem was solve prompte be to buy one at Costco because of their generous return policy.  Sadly ...  I was forced to take advantage of that policy and returned the camera last month. The Pros:  Digic 6 appeared to deliver better photos at all normal settings, and MUCH better settings at lower light.  I loved the "handheld nightshot" setting, and found myself using ...

The nicest little camera I have ever owned very intelligent. I brought it because of the feature set and portability over my DSLR.So far I have been very pleased with it's output and functionality.I can see how maybe the flash could be annoying to some people but I find it quirky and amusing almost like the 280 is saying "ha got ya ,you shouldn't have put your finger there" .Plus the flash looks good .The battery issue was solved by buying another one for $13.00 postage included ,that seems ...

I too have had issues with the camera's battery life. There is the temptation to turn on GPS logging, but this means that the camera is sitting there gathering GPS info EVEN WHEN SWITCHED OFF! It warns you on the screen about this every time you switch it off that GPS logging will still be active whilst the camera is off! Turn off the GPS functionality and only use it when you really need it and you will be fine. Otherwise, this is a great little camera. I have an Olympus OM-D, Fujifilm X-10 ...

I'm not going to add to the battery life complaints, there are plenty out there (see CANON.COM SX280HS forums). I did down load the firm ware released mid June and the battery life actually SHORTENED. Now, five minutes of video, DO NOT USE ZOOM during video or camera shuts down, ~7 minutes of videoing. Bottom line, do not buy this SX280 HS if you plan to use it for video. It does have nice, clear snap shots and great zoom, I'm very happy with that part of the camera. I think Canon really ...

Canon PowerShot SX280 HS Much of my photography is spontaneous, so I was looking for a small camera with good optical zoom that I could carry with me on my belt. I was also interested in using the optical zoom to get better photographs of birds. While there were many things I liked about the SX280 HS (the 20X zoom, good photo quality at higher ISOs, etc.), the poor battery life was not very good. This meant that before a full day in the field, I had to be sure to fully charge two batteries, ...
