Opinion: I am impressed with this camera. Easy to use. Very good pictures.
Problems: Tip: Buy a battery Sanyo 2700mAh or new model from Sanyo- ENELOOP- 2000mAh and charger: LaCrosse BC-700
or BC-900. After 1 charging I did moret 400 pictures. THIS IS BEST COMBINATION IN THE WORLD!
Opinion: When my compact P&S Canon SD630 fell and broke, I jumped at the opportunity to upgrade my level of photography skills with an advanced P&S with the portability of a non-SLR. I took nearly 20,000 photos with the 630 and after only 4 months with the SX110IS I am over 4,500. My main subject is my golden retriever dog, so having the ability to set many features like shutter speed, ISO, aperture, etc. has really upgraded my photography skills and resulted in some BEAUTIFUL photos of him! I don't think that I will ever need to upgrade to an SLR because this level of camera does pretty much everything I need it to do.
I paid about $250 in Canada at Black's in September or October '09. Cheaper than most of the compact point & shoots out there but it has twice as many features and way better quality.
My only 2 complaints about the SX110 is:
1) it would be better if there was more of a wide-angle lens.
2) the length of time it takes to recharge the flash is a good 6 or 7 seconds. It is a pain when you miss the shot the first time, however you get used to the wait and I usually adjust the settings in the meantime to take some non-flash photos and sometimes they end up working out better in the end.
Problems: see review section.
Opinion: Re battery life: Lithium batteries last FOREVER!!! Canon recommends using their rechargeable NiMH or AA Alkiline batteries and specifies it is not good to use ni-cads or manganese (non-alkalines). However, I asked Canon tech specifically if Lithium batteries can be used, and they said yes. I can take hundreds of large-file pics on one set. I always carry a spare pair, but rarely have to change them out.
Problems: I wish the right-hand grip was a little more substantial. I also do not like the battery door/setup (but, I rarely have to open it now that I use lithium batteries, so not a big deal).
Opinion: Excellent choice for "beyond PointAndShoot" but "Don't need an SLR for this". I've got some nice SLRs, but guess who stays home and who goes dancing? Pocketable, capable, good image quality, solid construction, great ergos, not too expensive. Had it for almost a year and very satisfied with the results: perfect for those times when a big SLR is just too much, but you still need some control. And the 10x zoom is quite handy. Good camera for birding trips in the woods.
Problems: Lack of a viewfinder when you're used to one (and wear bifocals) and it's sunny out;
Not much of a wide angle (especially for landscapes);
Wish it shot in RAW, too;
Autofocus gets confused sometimes (don't we all)
Opinion: Nice medium level camera. Manual controls were my sole reason for buying it, you won't find these features in this price range for the picture quality. In less than ideal lighting the noise is nearly intolerable for a $200 camera though. Video is subpar for this category compared to the Lumix.
Opinion: A very good camera, very complete for its kind.
Offers easy or complex use and gives posibility of taking very good pictures in the manual mode.
great display.
Problems: I've using this camera since february 2009, a month ago i dark smudge or spot had appear in the middle of the display and it gets in many pictures.
Perhaps a CCD problem or defect?
Opinion: I've had this camera for just under three months, and I've already taken over 700 pictures with it. I bought this as a back up camera for my canon S5 IS. The SX110 lives in my work bag or my purse, and I love having a 10x zoom camera for those shots I would otherwise have missed. Picture quality is great. I love the full manual controls. My son just used this to take over 100 pictures of a sunset at Sandy Hook, NJ, and they were outstanding, even in low light. I paid less than $200 for this camera, and I think it's an outstanding value.
Problems: I was using 2 AA alkaline batteries when I first got this camera; was dismayed at the short battery life. I bought a package of 4 lithium batteries for under 10 dollars at Target, and have much better batter life. The first two I put in lasted six weeks!
Opinion: I bought this camera to replace a failed A570, and am very happy that I did.
Pros: 1. Excellent daylight camera.
2. Portability - fits in the pocket of loose jeans
or dockers.
3. AA batteries (2).
4. Relatively low price ($224.95 at B&H).
Cons: 1. Weak flash. Auto ISO not much help.
2. Only moderate (6mm) wide angle.
3. Minor to moderate barrel distortion at wide
angle.
I've had the SX110 for one month, and have taken about 700 pictures with it.
Problems: Inadvertant spinning of control dial will possibly disrupt desired camera settings, such as file size in movie mode.
Opinion: Bought the camera for photos during a family reunion. Photos of reunion are mostly very good.
Glad I bought the camera for most purposes. Especially like composition grid.
I've been an amateur photographer since 1951.
Problems: 1. Cannot force fill flash! Flash only works when it wants to! This has proven to be a major issue!!! Also, no bounce flash.
2. Severely miss eyelevel viewing. My fault for not buying proper camera! Difficult to use in bright sunshine.
