Opinion: I previously owned canon ixus i7 and really really disappointed with it. however when one of my flatmate sold this SD990 i tried every possible way and was shocked with the ability of this great look like ford mustang GT design. i tried using in low light, i tried using in long exposure, i tried using outdoors and wallllla! i suddenly said i need this camera for everyday use and definitely love to play the manual mode.
Landscape at low light is best suit for this small camera.
Landscape at day time is best suit for this small camera.
Smoke photography using the burst of the build in flash has above average for this small camera as well.
Problems: For a beginner there is no issue using the auto mode, but if you try to experiment the P and M mode it is a little tricky and hard to handle you really need to focus and remember the settings you did. i shoot thousand and came across only 20% of satisfied captures. however it takes practice to master this camera.
Opinion: This cam take exelent pictures,Better then other small camera's I have,It is fast, and iff you use it for an point and shoot camera, you wil find yourself out of job,the camera handle everything for you. However you have full manuel control over the cam.
at wide de camera can take pictures in not so good light.
but at tele you need more light, the lens at 5.8 is to slow to use in less then stellar light.resulting in poor pictures.
De handle of the camera is abit wierd, the camera have no real soft holding paterns so the camera slip easy out of your hands.
At wide the camera produce soft corners,in all of the best light.
Batterie live is exelent, and lcd screen while not one of the biggest, have a good view clear and bright.
All by all it is an good cam, react fast whrite fast, but it is no dslr.
Even with an little bit bigger sensor the diference is small.
but stil better then other cams out there.
the files are heavy 7 MB to 9 MB is cammon for this cam, however the prise thad sd cards cost,is not an problem.
Problems: Softcorners at wide.
Dificult to handle.
Opinion: I got this camera in exchange for the somewhat bulky SX120. The SD990 is compact and fits into my holster. The shell seems a little cheap and slippery at times. I wish it had some rubber gripping. The cam takes great pictures in dark, light, indoors and outdoors on auto mode which makes it a great camera for point and shoot. It also takes great videos. I love this camera.
Problems: None found thus far.
Opinion: This camera replaced the 6MP IXUS P&S, with which we were quite satisfied, and is clearly a step up: the sensor has more pixels than necessary, but is apparently the same one as used in the G10, and the image-processing is a step up. Face detection is nice when the grandchild is not in the center of the frame. We like the instant post-exposure replay mode in which the focus point is shown in an inset at 1:1 so that focus accuracy can actually be assessed.
It's a lovely, pocketable, snapshot camera that provides excellent image quality without any fooling around when tweaking is impossible, such as flying my glider. I just works.
Battery life is very long (we don't use flash very much, and don't use the LCD much, either), and a 4MB SD card can be archived nicely on a DVD-R. Two SD cards, two batteries, and we're good for a couple of weeks.
Problems: Well, it's not an SLR. If I want the highlights preserved, or if the grandkids are moving fast, I have to use my SLR (Sony A700) for its instant focus and instant shutter. Like all P&S cameras, it has to meditate, however briefly, before actually launching itself to grab in image. Some modes are slower, some faster.
Opinion: I have used this camera about a month. I have been satisfied for the speed and options.
Manual focus is awesome.
Problems: High noise when shooted inside without flash.
Opinion: I use this camera as a backup to my Nikon DSLR's and to carry when an SLR is not
practical. This is my third Ixus. As usual the menu is simple, logical and powerful.
Image Quality is very good and I liked the larger sensor this camera provides. The
Camera is reasonably robust. The viewfinder is clear and movie mode is also pretty
good.
Problems: BUT - the biggest problem with this camera is the time it takes from button press until
the photo is taken. Much, much longer than my previous Ixus cameras and almost
enough for me to ditch it and look for something else. For anything fast moving, kids
or even portraits with a number of people in them, it's a real problem. Make sure you
test this before buying.
Opinion: Great Camera. I usually carry a Nikon D700, but need a great Point and Shoot
sometimes. The D700 has spoiled me because it has outstanding IQ. The 990 has
been outstanding. I have sold about 5 to friends when they see the pictures it takes
and run out and buy one. I think the new DIGIC 4 processor has something to do with
the better quality than my older PowerShot SD550. I added an 8GB SD card so I can
take tons of pictures. I highly recommend this camera. I don't care for Nikon's small
cameras.
Problems: No RAW file support. You have to use high quality JPEG.
Opinion: Excellent pocket camera. Had every type of ixus cameras but this one can compete with my "old" G9. Perfect in any occasion. Great image quality in every condition.
Problems: Maybe a little difficult to hold in hand, would be nice a rubber finish on the right side.
Opinion: Bought this camera to upgrade from the SD700 Elph. It takes very sharp pictures but it can't seem to handle far away bare trees. If lines are too close together, if you blow the picture up, you will see a smudging effect at various areas of the photo's. This degrades the image especially in wide angle landscape. Closer in it's as sharp as a needle. 14+ mp is too much for the sensor in this camera and you really don't get a much sharper picture, just bigger and more cropable one.
Problems: Smudging of image as result of noise reduction at wide angle landscape shots. This especially true of bare tree and bush detail as well as trees in the distance. This is true even at ISO 80.
Soft lens at the edges in wide angle landscape shots.
