Opinion: I just got this camera, so I'll update after a few weeks.
*** Hey! You can now turn off AIAF in auto mode now!
the camera thinks the eiffel tower (fridge magnet) is a face :P anyone tried cartoon faces? can't wait to try it on real faces.
$100 cheaper than my SD550 (1yo)... so I'll accept cost cutting in construction.
- 2007.11.1 update:
I have decided to give up on the sd800is. Compared to my SD550, the images were way too noisy - resulting in lower than 5mp resolution. I think its the small sensor/digic3 noise reduction (NR) algorithm.
Problems: - for a P&S, the firmware should be smarter and stay in ISO200 more for indoor shots.. Especially w/ AutoISO. It would make sense to have AutoHiISO to default at ISO400 for indoor shot.
- was i just really luckly w/ my SD550? The SD800 shots do not look as detailed. Need more time + wedding event for comparison.
- unused printshare button in rec mode. Should be used to trigger review mode. I dare canon to come out w/ a firmware update for this.
- 2007.11.1 update:
SMALL sensor is too noisy!!!
digic3 NR algorithm strips out too much detail I feel like I have a 5MP camera instead of 7MP.
Opinion: Now that I actually have the camera in my hands I can say I really do like it. This is my first Canon of any sort and must say I'm impressed with the SD Elph series and came close to buying the SD550 but bought the Pentax S6 at the time I was looking for an upgrade to my HP R717, which is my daughter's camera now.
With the 28mm lens, Image Stabilization and view finder which are the main reasons I bought the camera it will be a great companion for my D70 (w/18-200) on vacation trips.
My other compact digital camera's lenses were not wide enough for indoor and scenery shots many times. I should be good to go, for now.
Problems: So far no problems but then I haven't had it long enough.
Opinion: Not a huge upgrade from the SD700 IS, however with the new wide angle and larger sensor, it's a welcome addition.
Problems: IS not as precise as the S3, but very useful.
Opinion: Very noisy when iso 800 and 1600 were used. No ISO on EXIF info show in ACDSee, however it show in play back with the camera in manual model. This is my 3rd day using this camera so these are the thing I don't like so far, other then that it's a fun camera. Face detection is fun. Respose is quick. It has wide angle and IS. Good value for money.
Problems: ISO in EXIF info shown as Unknow in all mode.
Face detection does not recognize my dog's face.
