Opinion: Great little camera. I have 3 Canon's and this is my best one. Nice small package, but pack a big photographic punch.
Problems: None.
Opinion: this camera is bad. also i have lots of experience in cameras and this is one of the wroste
Problems: blurrrry not sharp at all. dont waste your money on this
no vale una mierda esta camara
Opinion: After using several digital camera's including from panasonic, nikon and Advent I would say that this is the best compact camera I have used.
Image quality is excellent, it has lots of features, build is excellent and it looks stunning.
The only thing that is not so good is that the zoom is only 3x, however image quality is good enough to allow you to crop your images without loss of quality.
Bought mine for £150 from PC world.
Problems: Nothing.
Opinion: Let me start by saying that I sold my A720IS to obtain the SD790IS. Very happy I did!
I had made my research on pocket cams and the SD790IS came in highly recommended everywhere!
Battery is beyond what I expected. Canon states 320 pics on one charge. I took aprox 220 which 70% of those using the flash. Power on/off at least 50 times. Took long vids between 1 to 5 minutes. Played with the setup menus a very long time on top of all that. LCD on all the time during those tests and it decided to quit after all those tests!
The IS is great especially for people that have the shakes!
Pic quality is awesome! Better than I expected!
Video has a great quality and sound on them is OK.
CHDK is being developed for this cam! If you don't know what that is, Google it and you might like to give it a shot!!
PROS:
Fast boot-up to snap pics!
Image Quality is superior than most in it's class
Great flash for such a small cam!
Great in low light when in manual mode
Good features (could have more manual ones)
Fantastic Battery Life!
Fantastic 3" LCD
Built like a tank
External Flash can be attached to it!
CHDK can be used! (in Dev!)
CONS:
Corners are dark in wide when flash is used (common with small cams)
Manual mode could have more options
Flash recycle time could be quicker but good enough for me
Not so good over ISO400
To conclude, I was looking for a cam that I could lug around in my pockets that can take great pics. This camera gives me that and WAY more! I highly recommend the SD790IS!
Problems: No problems so far!
Opinion: Great shots for the price!!!
I bought this camera after returning a Fujifilm J150w (see my review there for comparison). All I was looking for was a simple camera with a big LCD and good picture quality. This has all of those things, and for the money you can't go wrong.
I went with the 790 even though the 880 and 890 were available. I did this based on the reviews on this website. There were a lot of complaints that the 880 took blurry pictures, and Rick Fuchs review on the 890 scared me away from that one as well. The 790 on the other hand seemed to have mostly great things to be said. So I hoped the dpreview community got it right.
In my opinion, they did. I picked up this camera just under 200.00 on-sale, and so far I am very pleased. There are some great features worth mentioning.
The face detection is fairly quick, and helps a lot with portrait shots to make sure you get the subject's face in focus and not accidentally something in the background. It's tricky with kids because of them moving around most of the time, but still does pretty well. It even has an option to lock onto a face once detected to help with tracking/movement.
The shoot-modes are probably more than I need, but the ones I like in particular are: auto, portrait, kids/pets, and manual. For the most part auto will do just fine, and I am very pleased with the quality of the photos. The portrait softens up the image a bit, and seems to take shots nice and clear at a low ISO. The kids/pets apparently helps to get shots of subjects that are always moving around. From what I have found so far I have not had a blurry image yet. And of course manual, where you can tweak a lot of the settings (flash, ISO, exposure, resolution, compression, etc).
The video mode is average, but what I did notice is the mic picks up sound surprisingly well. Not as good as a camcorder of course, but definitely good for those moments where you want to capture a candid moment and throw it onto your website or youtube.
The battery is quite a good capacity @ 1120mah, which should give great usage times. I have not drained the battery fully yet so I can't exactly say how long it will last, but other cameras I was looking at only had 750mah cells. Common sense tells me this one will definitely outlast that of a lower mah capacity.
Apparently you can add a flash onto this bad boy at the bottom of the camera! I haven't looked into this too much, but I don't know of many cameras that have this ability for being a 200.00 range compact point and shoot.
Another thing to note is the connection to the PC is a standard mini-USB which is very common on mobile phones and other devices so chances are if you're out and about and you don't have your cable and you want to get something of your camera, you will be able to do so at a friend's house. The Fuji I returned had a different style USB connection so you would have to have that cable with you if you wanted to txfer images (or have a card reader handy).
One more nice little feature on this camera is that it has a tilt sensor. This means it will auto-rotate pictures taken vertically (sorry I don't know the actual term, the tall way :-) ) and will also rotate images/videos in playback mode when tilting the camera.
In conclusion, for me, as stated, I was looking for a cheap camera with a big LCD that took great pictures. This camera does that plus with all the added features I am very happy with my purchase.
Problems: Wheel navigation takes some getting used to, but comes in very handy once you get the hang of it.
Red eye correction doesn't work great.
Opinion: Highly recommended!
Opinion: This is an excellent all around pocket camera. Very durable, quick to start up, picture quality is excellent, colors vibrant but not overly saturated. The screen and buttons are well placed and designed. Avi movies are memory hogs, but they look so much better on the computer screen than the mpg4 or qt movies do.
In the last 12 years I have had a olympus, casio, nikon, 2 other canons, panasonic, samsung, 2 sonys. I can honestly say this is the best over all point n shoot pocket camera I have owned.
The battery life is absolutely amazing better than any camera I have had before hands down. I changed the battery once in 6 weeks after shooting 100's of photos and a bunch of movies.
Problems: Like most if not all point n shoots its inside and low light capabilities are lacking. Manual controls are missing, I would love to be able to change the aperature or shutter speed, etc. 3x optical zoom and no optical zooming during movies. Can't change the brightness of a photo in review mode.
This camera would be perfect if it had a wide angle like 28mm and a 5x optical zoom and more manual controls, and optical zoom during movies. They could add high definition movies as well.
Opinion: I have had quite a few small cameras from the S400, SD870 and Fuji F20 & F30 but this is by far my favorite carry anytime pocket camera. The low light capabilities may not be quite as good as the Fuji's but it beats them soundly in daylight shots and I like the colors and clarity much better
Problems: The movie, scene, shot selector gets moved when sliding in and out of the case. I have tried to take a still picture in movie mode a few times.
Opinion: This camera is my 3rd point and shoot and its fantastic in terms of handling - both
physical and digital. The body is metal - feels and looks durable - and the weight of
the camera feels good in my hand and is not as light/flimsy as other ultra-compact
point & shoots.
The color treatment of my shots are excellent. Vivid mode does a great job and
makes everything look really vibrant - perfect for cloudy gray days! I always leave
the mode on Manual because I like to have some control on its behavior. I really
wish Canon would bring back the old Manual controls that allow the independent
adjustment of aperture and shutter speed. The digital macro mode tends to work
better than the normal macro in terms of getting an accurate macro focus. The
battery life is quite good, and I hardly have to charge it.
The LCD screen display makes everything look really good (big, clean, sharp,
bright) without you having to put it on the computer screen first. The start up time
for the camera is super fast too, minimizing your chance of missing the perfect
shot. :)
If your looking for a point & shoot, the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS won't
disappoint, I'm so happy I got mine!
Problems: None, I've used it for over month and shot 1000's of pictures :) on 2 battery charges.
