Opinion: Lasted only 1.5 years. LCD broke and now does not work at all. Good, yet sometimes inconsistant picuture quality.
Problems: Positives
Generally good picture quality although can be inconsistant
Very portable - fits in your pocket with ease
Software is user friendly
Lots of options to change settings
Negatives
LCD broke with minimal pressure (in my pocket)
No battery indicator and little warning before battery failure
Came with very low capacity data card (32 megs?)
Did not last very long - I expected better value at this cost
Opinion: There is a serious diference in construction quality between IXUS 700 and SD500. I bought de sd 500 (US) and my friend bought the ixus 700 (japan) and compared them. My advice go for sd500
Problems: none, very good camera
Opinion: Had this for not quite a year now. Looks great, nice and compact for travel and on the go use. Fast and excellent performance for the most part (see below) Great pocket camera overall just minor nitpicks
Problems: Battery life could have been better its fine but not as excellent as it could have been.
Purple fringing.
red eye but its common among compacts and the included software can remove it just fine.
Not fond of the plastic door to the USB port brings down the construction quality. LCD is a nice size but needs higher resolution.
For this class the features are fine but if you want complete control via manual controls don't expect it. You have ISO and white balance and a gimmicky feature called my colors and thats about it.
Opinion: Excellent camera, superb construction with one flaw (see below).
Problems: After three days the LCD screen went bad (no cracks, just a black blob on a white screen). I found out, mainly from this very website, that many others were experiencing the same problem. The vendor replaced the camera promptly and I haven't had any furthur problems, mainly because I installed an after-market hard flip-up LCD protector (Delkin), which looks like original equipment.
Problem solved !!
Opinion: Love the size of this camera ... this is my 4th digital camera and by far the easiest to take with me everywhere and thus get more shots than I would otherwise.
Problems: Camera has twice now failed with the lens locking in the open position. First time Canon fixed free of charge and very promptly and I am just sending if off with fingers crossed for a repeat. Case and LCD scratches if you even look at it wrong. However, still like the camera due to image size and convienence.
Opinion: This is my first digital camera therefore I can't really compare it to any other. I can tell however that it takes very good pictures if you use the auto setting. I found that higher ISOs do result in a lot of noise. I took pictures indoors at night in ambient lighting and set the camera in Manual at ISO 400. The resulting print came out quite noisy especially the black colors. I wouldn't use ISO 400 again, and would probably just use auto settings most of the time. There is also a problem with red eye, but nothing that the accompanying software can't correct. It's sometimes slow in writing to memory when in macro mode. To be fair though, I'm not sure if I'm using the feature correctly. I haven't used all the features such as AIAF, white balance, etc because honestly, I don't know what they are for. Overall, for a average user, this camera is more than ample.
Problems: Noise at high ISO.
Red eye.
Opinion: Satisfied with image quality and features after 6 months of use
Problems: 1 week ago LCD stopped working and appears cracked even though I keep it in a thick protective case. Just sent it back to Canon, will see how they handle this since it appears to be a common problem
Opinion: Got this camera around June2005, to replace the old bottom end Canon A200. This is a great camera, Image quality is amazing, as well as the movie mode, which is the primary reason for buying this camera. I'ts amazing for point and shoot because its tiny yet it behaves almost like a DSLR, with exceptional image quality and features. It is great for what I am using for.
Sometimes I believe it could use more features, like 30 sec exposure. Or a larger zoom. But then the camera would be progressively larger.
Overall I love it and will only buy Canon.
Opinion: My opinion is biased from a Canon PowerShot G2 I have been using for some years.
1. Really quick to start and shoot.
2. Small & light, but needs very careful handling. Otherwise its unprotected LCD is prone to scratch or crack.
3. Battery life is medium - especially compared to G2's excellent battery.
Problems: 1. After a session with the camera full of pictures and empty battery, you take out the battery to charge it, and you cannot download the pictures taken.
2. Not having a twisting an LCD screen is a serious drawback.
3. The rate of good pictures (problems: focusing & shaken pictures) is less than expected. So take many pictures.
CONCLUSION: Each type of camera (ultra-compact, normal, super-zoom, dSLR, etc) has pros and cons. Concentrate on the type of camera and take note of the features that matter most to you (twisting LCD, optical zoom, picture quality, speed, etc). Choosing the brand/model is secondary. Even the best model of a type will not make you happy if you don't consider the features wanted.
