Opinion: Yes, the battery cover opens too easily. And yes... the material of the camera is too bad... but you never guess, what problems my camera did survived.

Once my camera slipped out of my hands and hit the ground. The LCD screen was broken and one side near the screen was slightly in curved. But the rest... was 100% working! So I've bought a new LCD and the factory changed it. Everything was fine again... but then it happened...

On a river trip with canoe... At the finish line inside canoe my s80 was floating inside a bag full of water. Nevertheless I've switched it ON (stupid of me) and after 5, maybe 10 shots my camera just appeared in total black silence...
So 2 years have past. I have found my camera near the other broken garbage. Other tries to turn on my cam' s80 every half past year just "brought my smile down" in to a sad sad face. But this time "in a battery charge moment"... the camera went ALIVE! Nevertheless it was working also 100%! Actually,... now, when viewing a recorded video, the sound of it has a little noise... like the recorded sound was going through the green swamp leaves... But you can hear your voice.
So my resume...
1) Canon PowerShot s80 "feeds my needs" (and the price was low)
2) There is no nicer camera than this one (you must look after it like the other cameras too)
3)The li-on battery sustains very long (when a red battery icon appears, I am switching off the display ;)
4) The quality of pictures are excellent (compliments from everybody, that have seen the pictures)
5) The menu understandable, easy of use and if you want - just try every menu detail in a week... (You will like it if you have more patience)
6) My fiancee Jurgute likes this camera, and she is always right :)

Problems: Any problems encountered, these situations I've wrote, recompense everything. THANK YOU, CANON!

Opinion: The wide angle lens is awesome in your pocket!
I had to send mine back due to the lens door getting stuck but canon fixed it for free no problem.
This camera takes beautiful photos!
The dial for shooting modes is easy to turn accidentially and thus messes up your shots. I keep it on P or A most of the time to avoid this.

Problems: the lens door getting stuck, fixed by Canon

Opinion: ONCE I WROTE THIS.. BECAUSE I WAS A HAPPY NEW OWNER...
Overall I've been thrilled with this camera, as a novice I have enjoyed learning about it. Great shots even in a dark room I'm impressed with the quality.
FAST FORWARD ALMOST 1 YEAR AND IT'S GARBAGE. I ended up giving it to Canon and they 'generously' sent em a cheap refurbished inferior camera for an additional slap in the face of $175. Guess what?! It died the same death less than 7 months later (uo-oh only 3 mos warranty) by by money.

Problems: It could be built a little better - Controls and Battery door are easily moved/opened. I got a year out of it until I opened the lens cover and the lens stuck, camera made a loud grinding noise, beeped and quit! Showing "E18" on the LCD. Returning to Canon for repair - expected to cost $150+. "E18 error" seems to be common with Canon judging by the results of my online search.

Opinion: great pix on a terrible camera.

first of all, its a beast for a pocket digital camera. having only seen pix and what, at the time, where rave reviews when i t came out, i was shocked to actually hold it. its like 2 inches thick! Canons pics made it look so tiny -- they must've found some gigantic woman for the hand-held comparison shots. but Canon's size misrepresentation aside, the pics were great quality. however, it broke constantly (E-18 error - which meant the lens got stuck in retraction and ceased to work at all). to make matters worse, when i sent it in for repairs, Canon tried to get out of doing it under the warranty! they referred to a cosmetic scratch on said that the camera had been abused, and so subsequently, the warranty was void. (side note: if you scream your lungs out with righteous indignation, they will cave on this). then i got the camera back and low and behold, two days into my trip to Japan, the same problem! completely unreliable camera. i'll probably never buy a Canon again.

Problems: Canon customer service.
E-18 error, constantly.

Opinion: This model Canon has not been a good choice for us. This is the 5th Canon Camera we have owned. The photos are excellent, good color and sharpness. The ease of use is also excellent. It is very easy to change the ISO setting and easy to turn the flash on and off (In Program mode). The start up time is also excellent. The large LCD screen is sharp and easy to view even in bright sunlight.

Problems: I bought this camera for my wife in April, 2006. Two months later the camera stopped working and had to be sent in for repair. Last week it quit again also requiring factory repair. The Mode selection dial that prodtrudes from the side of the camera is easliy bumped and changed, especially when carried in a purse. The design of this camera leads to frustration and mechanical failure. Canon has better models out there.

Opinion: After taking over 6000 photos with the camera, I am frequently impressed with the picture quality and ease of optional functions for greater personal touch.

However the slide cover that opens and closes over the lense has begun to wear tracks into the black painted aluminium open area beside the lense. It seems there is metal guide blocks on the bottom of the cover digging in....an aesthetic problem that could have been avoided with better materials

The lcd screen also seems to be taking a fare bit of toll, despite living in protection when not used the screens protctive cover has worn leaving it with a rubbed worn look......

Problems: Poor material selection for cover creating rail guages in camera.

Opinion: I boutght the Canon S80 about 6 months ago. Excellent camera it is, I can say. The design is compact and ellegant and it's so easy to use. Portable to bring anywhere. This is the portable camera for MAN, so many girls surrounded me to have a watch on the S80. Video quality is good, especially 1024x768 (wish it had 25/30fps i/o 15 - of course cannot be compared with any video from camcorders). 3.6 x zoom is alittle bit short. Briefly it's the right decision for amateurs/ tourists to buy this amaging camera. hcongthanh@yahoo.com

Opinion: I was disapointed by this camera - Mostly because of the construction. The lens cover door likes to open up on it's own inside jacket pockets during regular use. If the camera is surrounded by an after market leather case - the lens will stop short of full extension and break. The only work around I found was to remove the battery when traveling with this camera. Although it does take great wide photos and movies. Food for thought.
