Opinion: Excellent camera. It has everything from auto to full manual controls. Very sharp pictures. Purple fringing appears in some certain conditions but is insignificant compared to other 10X cameras. Optical IS works great. Conclusion: best option in the range of 10X cameras.
Problems: Nothing important. My camera has a very small dust fragment inside the lens. I hope it is there from assembling process and there is no opening for dust to enter in the optical system. The camera body could be somehow more robust.
Opinion: having used the camera since half a year. here are my comments: the S1 has intuitive menues (much more logical than any, lets say, olympus). the printed manual covers every aspect of the camera on 180 pages (hardly any other camera comes with a printed manual). nevertheless taking good pictures takes some time practising. turn on image sharpening and more contrast then the softness in the pics, some people complain about, is gone. the S1 takes excellent pictures. incredible battery life, standard batteries, standard CF and microdrive. great swivel lcd (i'll never buy a camera again without this feature). a wide range of third party lenses/converters (52 mm) available. the S1 has a good size which makes handling easy. the latest firmware update has made the camera even better! take a look at the canon talk forum on this site (especially the "S1 tips and tricks" thread) - there are tons of information on this camera that already has a cult following...
Problems: only minor issues: at first i missed a focus assist light, but when i found out how to use the hyperfocal mode (check the canon talk forum), i take extremely well focused pictures even in extreme darkness from about 1,5 meters onwards (as far as the flash reaches) - good at events, parties and so on.
i'd like to keep the shutter sound and get rid of the focus beep (impossible, either shut off all sounds or live with the beep sound when focussing is complete).
lens hood is loose (but i use the lens adapter anyway, so i don't care). some focus assists like the olympus 5060 has (grid on the lcd screen on the backside...).
Opinion: Very good camera - Excellent 10X optical zoom - Good digital zoom.
...
Problems: No AF assistance lamp - Noise in low light photo - Problem in the focusing with low light - Average quality of auto white balance. Average quality of joy key.
...
Opinion: With IS at 10x zoom, who cares whether it's only a 3.2MP camera? I've tried other 10x zoom cameras without IS and it's almost impossible to get a sharp picture unless you're on a tripod! It's really good value for your money and the image quality are up to my standards. For a beginner you can just use it as a point and shoot as you learn more about photography. For more experienced users i believe the manual settings will satisfy you as well. Overall this camera has really made my day and i have no qualms about recommending this camera to those interested in photography. I'm really happy with my purchase.
Problems: Kinda complicated to figure out the controls at first, but upon reading the manual and time spent in exploring what this camera can do, it's really fun!
