I bought this for my Mum for Xmas.  She loves it.  For a small camera the photo quality is excellent.  The rear screen and bright and easy to see even in bright sunlight.  I can't see any faults in his camera.

These are on big discount from Canon UK on "Refurb" at the moment at under £100 and it`s a real bargain at this price, the newer 510 version replaced the buttons with a touchscreen which was more of a hinder than a help (too easy to press stuff when handling the cam) and didn`t improve anything worthwhile so the 500 is the one to get ..... Basically from what I can gather it uses a 1:2.3" 16Mp BSI sensor (not 1/3") and uses a form of always on (Hidden) Intelligent zoom to fake 12X optical in ...

This slim camera offers a small switch for easy switching between auto and manual modes. However for some odd reason image stabilization only works in auto mode. The battery burns out fast on this model, especially if you're shooting video. Those two issues are so far the only negatives I've found. Awesome video and picture quality compared to what I paid (was on sale at a local dealer for close to 168 us dollar (converted from my currency) The 12x zoom is incredible and low light shooting ...

Just got the camera and have not had a real good opportunity to put it through its paces. Out of what I have done, I am very pleased with the low light capabilities.  It is a very nice design, very compact and sleek.  The 3" screen is very good and the controls are simple.  My only issue thus far is the use of micro sd only, but I guess in order to get the body so small, some concessions had to be made.  This was purchased as a travel/vacation camera, and I think it covers this area well.

Excellent device. Camera has a tiny, light and cute, with a very powerful for its size optical zoom. Problems: Closing speed. The first picture can only be done through 2.95 seconds after pressing the power button, while most compact fit in the 2-second standard.

This camera looks & feels tiny but its features are impressive. 12x zoom of course compromises its f value (just f/3.4 at wide angle) but apparently its HS system (10.1mp cmos sensor) compensates well; even in low light you get reasonable to good pictures without flash. Zooming is smooth, and the full range is available during recording of movies (although the noise of the zoom drive is audible). The Digic5 processor comes packed with features like face recognition, AF tracking etc. with ...

ehm... the review makes very much sense, I'm just wondering how could canon cramed 10MP into a tiny mini 1/3" sensor, it doesn't make the slightest sense

I was sold this camera as a replacement for my aging Canon powershot A700 which has got to a point where it is starting to produce less than ideal pictures. Unfortunately, the Ixus 500 HS is worse than my 5 year old powershot! One of the things that drove my choice and purchase was the nice small form factor. This camera looks great, especially in the red. The quality of pictures was very poor, too much noise and very grainy. For $400 I expected much more. I have always bought Canon cameras, ...
