Announced in September 2006, the G7 came as something of a surprise to many who had written off the G series of high end PowerShots when the G6 (launched 2004) wasn't replaced for 2 years. The G series has a long and distinguished history at the top of Canon's PowerShot range, offering SLR-like functionality in a solid, compact body and high-end features such as fast lenses and external flash capabilities. The G7 continues the tradition, adding all Canon's latest gizmos (including the new Digic III processor, face detection and image stabilization), though the loss of raw modeand vari-angle screen upset many (it returned in later models). Although capable of excellent results, it was a little too buggy to really impress, and its successors are all better cameras.

Opinion: Why such a nice compact camera, so good for emergency backup to my 5d in the field was made without RAW format??!!
what a pity
Canon Managers! Bring back the raw format to compact semi-pro cameras please!!!
Problems: No RAW!!! No RAW!!!
Opinion: It simply sucks.
The best features from the G series has been dropped by Canon.
Good work canon keep it this way the competitors will bust you soon.
I still hope there will be a PRO2.
Problems: - No RAW
- No Remote Control
- No Rotating LCD
- Very ugly design, Canon is going backwards instead of forward with this economical design.
- No USM zoom motor.
- No wide lens.
- I beter get an A640 which has almost the same features, and a rotating LCD, the same CCD, almost the same image quality and is much more cheaper.
- This is not an advanced camera anymore, it lacks a lot of features which other manufacturers have them.
Opinion: In the early seventies, it took me a whole year to settle on which affordable 35 mm camera to buy, I settled on Nikromat EL. There is no such thing as the perfect camera. However, I think Canon now has a case of over confidence due to their market share. They even are ignoring the dust problems in some of their expensive lenses that are filling the web. Where are their marketing people? To get to my point, I have a G6 for two years and 10,000 shots at an image quality of precisely 8.5 out of 10 as this website fairly gave it. I was not happy with the image quality (I have a Hasselblad XPAN, talking about image quality). Finally I would like to share the other two opinions posted that Canon dose not listen to the COUSTEMERS. (1) Where is the remote? (2) Where is the RAW? (3) Where is the swivel screen?
Opinion: What were they thinking...
I like the new look, that it's small and it's great to have the optical image stabilizer. Also I'm convinced that the image quality will be great, BUT!!!
I have a EOS 5D and two G6 at the moment and would have bought a G7 straight away, but without RAW and no swivel screen - as much as I like Canon and the feel of their images and the design of the menus, this camera will be useless for me and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Looking at the depressed faces of the Canon representatives at Photokina upon mentioning the RAW issue I'm sure that even within the company people are aware that this is a major issue...
Problems: -No RAW!!!
-No Swivel Screen
-the lovely click wheel on top is gone
Pros:
-Optical Image Stabilizer
-small
-large screen
