14.7 megapixels | 3" screen | 28 – 140 mm (5×)

The G10 is the third incarnation of Canon’s flagship ‘prosumer’ compact since the G series was reinvented with the G7 in 2006. The G10 builds on the successful formula of the G9 by adding handling and control refinements, improving the LCD resolution, and, most importantly, adding a wider lens starting at 28mm (equiv.). It also retains the rangefinder styling, solid build quality and extensive external controls (plus a new and a very useful AE compensation dial). A joy to use, the G10 is let down only by the image quality, which simply isn't any better than any other half-decent compact on the market today.

Opinion: I have only had this camera few days. Unfortunately Canon has not arranged for
raw files on the G10 to be recognised by Photoshop, which is ridiculous.
One of the most important qualities of a camera for me is that it must be small
and easy to carry. I have never understood why a digital camera needs a mirror
system at all. It makes all slr’s so heavy and bulky. I have never understood the
need for a full frame sensor, as the 35mm format, historically, is accidental, and It
requires large and heavy lenses. Most photography could be done using a smaller
very high quality sensor and smaller, lighter lenses. Canon really needs to make some
sense of their camera range anddesign strategy . I need absolutely no shutter delay.
This seems to be the case with
the new G10 and the auto focus works really quickly. I have high hopes for the
camera.

Problems: photoshop raw for G10 urgently needed. Wake up Canon

Opinion: shawnfb,

Sounds like the face recognition feature. When not actually looking at human face, it tries to 'see' one in whatever it's looking at. Mine does that. Since it's not clear what exactly the face detect does for you anyway, you could just turn the feature off.

Problems: None, so far.

Opinion: After two months, I love the feel of this camera. It's serious.
The control for exposure compensation, which I use constantly, is at your left
fingertip. Very thoughtful. The lens is very good, especially at near and macro ranges.
The wideangle has plenty of barrel distortion, but what camera with this range does
not?
The flash compensation is too difficult to access readily and accurately, and overall the
images are, at maximum resolution, a bit smeary.Still, lovely color.
I put the 880IS in my pocket for parties, but this is my weekend camera now!
