Canon PowerShot G10
14.7 megapixels | 3" screen | 28 – 140 mm (5×)
The G10 is the third incarnation of Canon’s flagship ‘prosumer’ compact since the G series was reinvented with the G7 in 2006. The G10 builds on the successful formula of the G9 by adding handling and control refinements, improving the LCD resolution, and, most importantly, adding a wider lens starting at 28mm (equiv.). It also retains the rangefinder styling, solid build quality and extensive external controls (plus a new and a very useful AE compensation dial). A joy to use, the G10 is let down only by the image quality, which simply isn't any better than any other half-decent compact on the market today.

The Canon PowerShot G10 is a very capable fixed-lens camera that does just about everything right. It's fast, well built, customizable, and expandable. Unfortunately, it's biggest problems relate to image quality, specifically to noise. Canon threw the highest resolution sensor they could find into the G10 (14.7 Megapixel), and they've had to apply a lot of noise reduction to keep noise in check. While photos look very good at low ISOs, things go downhill rapidly, especially in low light. I can recommend the PowerShot G10 to those who plan on keeping the ISO relatively low. However, if you're a high ISO or low light shooter, it's probably worth stepping up to a digital SLR.

With the G10, Canon’s sensibly kept the full manual control, RAW recording and flash hotshoe of its predecessor, but made a number of enhancements, some expected, others less so. One of the most requested was a widening of its lens...
