Problems: Schermo ruotante fragile. Lenta. Mirino piccolo e scarno. Menù obsoleti. Utilizza solo CF primo tipo.
Opinion: I had this camera for 7 months in 2000 / 2001.
Well build. Many features, pleasing even the professional.
Problems: A really slow start-up, too slow for me.
The main disappointment was the harsh 'blue fringing' that could be seen in many images. This was unacceptable to me and the main reason I sold it.
Opinion: Very good for amateurs who are starting to get serious about their photography.
Some of my G1 pictures can be found here: http://www.photo.net/shared/community-member?user_id=350641
Problems: No problems encountered.
Opinion: I bought this camera 3 months ago and I can say that I'm
not satisfied.Very slow start up time, and extremely poor autofocus....Nikon 990 is much better....
Opinion: Canon G1 is my first DC.i think it's good!
Problems: color is not as good as sony .and it's too heavy!
Opinion: 14 months and 3000 pix user of the G1. The camera has an excellent build quality and extensive features for the Pro-Am user. The G1's now ubiquitous lens was revolutionary and fast (f2-2.5) when new. It is still a big selling feature. The ajustability of the camera for exposure and flash compensation rival most high-end film camera, although the menu takes a little time to navagate. I used this camera right along side my EOS3 and sometimes use it instead of a polaroid back (which doesn't exist for the EOS3) to test studio lighting. The G1 works well with the 420EX and 550EX flash; and will even do second curtain flash sync with the 550EX (set through the 550EX, not the camera). Overall very high marks and can't see a need to upgrade to G2 yet. Best of all, at the time of this writing (05/2002) you can get this camera for sub $500 price (if you can find it).
Problems: Five issues noted: (1) flash can overexpose closeups, (2) some chromatic abbrassion on bright days, (3) Canon's bundled software is slow, (4) options in menu should be set through push button and selector wheel like Canon's EOS cameras, (5) shutter lag saddens me, but it exists with most all pro-sumer digicams.
Opinion: I purchased my G1 over a year ago. It worked well to start with and I took a lot of pictures with it (7000) I am a real fan of canon cameras having used EOS slrs for years. But I have been disappointed with the focusing particularly at close range and recently the camera developed an electrical fault when I was changing batteries. Having searched the internet...I have found other reports of G1s doing this. Canon wanted to charge almost £400 to mend the fault. This seems to be their standard charge as others have reported similar figures. So I have just purchased a Nikon instead.
Problems: Focusing at close range and of light subjects on dark backgrounds is poor.
The camera developed an electrical fault and Canon wanted approx £400 to mend the fault.
Opinion: Great value even with issues.
I use for scientific and archival work. After 12 months, still shooting at my 130,000th picture. GREAT value for resolution, color, and image quality at ISO50 with my work load.
Zoom function failed 8 months in, and I now use remote control to change the zoom level when the zoom lever is affixed to one side. Started clean, but now 6 hot&dead pixels with age. After 6 months, sometimes shuts itself down at random (on power supply) at average 1,500 shots per failure.
Opinion: I've had two refurbished models that I bought from B&H photo. The first one developed a hot pixel after about 3 weeks sent it back to the company and they sent another one. This one, after 1 week developed a black spot on the LCD display. Quality?
The chromatic abberation is something to be astounded by. I cannot believe a "pro" quality digital camera for its time would produce pictures this bad. The autofocus is terrible at times when doing macro like work. The start up times are slow, everything is slow.
On occasion, it will produce a very nice image but it takes just the right conditions, technique. I quite disappointed by a lot of its disfunctions but am happy with the image quality that I can get. The versatility is the only thing that sold me i.e. manual setting, aperature priority etc.
Problems: red spots on the sensor, black spots on the LCD.
