Opinion: I was expecting a lot of compromises in this camera but ended up having far fewer than expected. Really exceptional quality for the class, the LCD is viewable in bright sunlight and twists and swivels. Remote control, battery, ac adapter / charger are all included. This makes the camera very economical compared to other choices. The batter is a big plus as it is the same used in camcorders. So it has much more juice that other units. I have 80mb of storage and have not drained the batteries in a day yet using the LCD the entire time. Truly impressive longevity!

Problems: LCD in dim light shows scan lines.

Opinion: I was St. Thomas and walked into the shop knowing I wanted a Coolpix 990. I walked out with the G1. I am completely satisfied with the construction of this camera. It is very well thought out. I have some beautiful pics of sunsets in St.Thomas and Moonlight over the Bahamas. It is a phenominal camera in a simple package.

Opinion: I have had my G1 for a bit over 5 months now and have nothing but praise to sing! I have shot 5000+ images and video. Needless to say but I am quite flush with shots to last for some time. The performance of the G1 has exceeded my expectations. Prior to getting the G1 a good friend let my borrow his Epson to use on a cruise. I shot 800 pics in 10 days! After that experience I gained an appreciation for what I needed:

1). Higher storage capacity (CF2 IBM MD is best)

2). Faster lens with some zoom ability

3). Better battery or more spares to swap

4). 3MP AND superior image quality (IE):

a). Low Noise

b). Must perform well in low light or at night

c). No red eye please

d). Superior reviews at DPR (etc) on image Q.

5). A hot shoe (TTL all the better)

Oddly enough, besides these factors being met.... the feature I appreciate most is the LCD. The brightness and flexability have enabled better shots at odd angles. Then the feature I like 2nd most is the power efficiency. The battery runs about 200+ shots with heavy LCD use and moderate use of the flash. I still carry a spare because I like to review and share my shots on the spot.

Although I've been an avid photgrapher for 20 years... I'm still quite new to the digital format. It was only recently that I discovered on line posting sites. I now have a couple hundered shots for friends, family and business associates posted. The overall excitement has been remarkable.

I must add that the speedlight 420EX has been a wonderful addition! Exposures are definately improved. The ability to bounce the flash has resulted in very nice images.

I had just received an Epson for christmas. Printing at home is my next adventure. I have been buying many beautiful prints from DOTphoto.com with great satisfaction... except they sent a large print in a plastic tube which was crushed! I'm still waiting for their response to my complaint. At any rate, The images on monitor and TV have been very nice looking for sharing with others.

Problems: The Canon lens adaptor obstructs the flash. With the wide angle lens on - the G1 looks way cool but needs an external flash while all composing has to via the LCD. I like using the Lensmate with a UV because it is far less obstructive to the flash but affords protection for the G1 lens and zoom assembly.

The 2nd problem is actually more serious. I've really been spending a lot of time with digicam related activity. With taking so many pictures my wife has become kind of tolerant if you know what I mean.

3rd. I have 2 batteries. It seems as if when the batteries were new the performance was slightly higher. However, I have not run an effective test to verify my suspicions. In any event, there is still very good usability. The perception of a loss in power may be related to my discovery in manual of their recommendation NOT to fully charge the batteries until just prior to usage. Consequently, I don't always have two fully charged batteries on hand.
