Opinion: I have been using this camera for years now and don't want to replace it with another one. My PowerShot A95 replaced a PowerShot G1 - same features (apart from the remote), but 5MP, portrait/landscape sensor, smaller & lighter. I like the display that can be flipped and turned - this allows taking pics from unusual angles. Full manuall control invites for experiments. Image and video quality is ok. Again - I dont want to replace it with any other currently available camera, especially not with one of those ridiculous 10 or 12 MP cameras! Nothing but waste of storage space and the source of image noise...
Problems: Had twice an E30 lens error. It can be resolved by hitting the camera firmly on a desk or so in a certain angle (google the exact procedure!). In April 2008 the CCD sensor got defective. It belongs to a series of faulty sensors made by Sony. I got mine replaced for FREE within a week (years after the warranty had expired!). Canon's service in Switzerland is great!
Opinion: Owned for three years and had mixed experiences. This is a fantastic digicam for outdoor shooting in sunny days, but mediocre for indoor and night shots. Flash recycling is too slow, and focus is slow and often off indoor. ISO 50 is great, but ISO 200-400 show grainy backgrounds. Even in sunny days, I experienced blown-out sky as mentioned in other reviews. I fixed this by adjusting the exposure. Burly images can be avoided by taking multiple pictures at the same time, and one of them is OK if I am lucky. After all the experiences I ended up buying a dSLR, and this one is used solely for outdoors in daytime and dSLR for other occasions, which has been perfect.
Problems: None other than the issues mentioned above.
Opinion: Had this camera for 2.5 years. First digital camera. Purchased this camera because wanted to learn how to use Tv, Av etc and other settings correctly. With a view to getting DSLR in the future. A95 is great for this.
Flip out screen is a great feature which enables unusual shooting angles & candids.
Solidly built with controls very easily accessed. Fits nicely in the hand. Now starting to get frustrated that settings such as WB & ISO are hidded in menu, but I guess this is indicative of progress in using the camera.
An excellent camera for a beginner. Old tech now, but worth the cash it is going for on eBay.
Problems: Main problem has been with the lack of sharpness in the end product. Pictures often very soft & blurred - even from tripod & sel-timer! I print no bigger that 7x5, but still obvious soft edges.
Value for money score based on the fact that nowadays one can buy a much more sophisticated camera for similar price or just a wee bit more.
Opinion: As a professional photographer I use Fuji S2 Pro's in my studio. However for personal use, we are now on our 4th digital camera. My last one was a Sony F707 that while I loved this camera, wanted something smaller. We opted for the A95. The camera takes great pictures of scenery in full light. The swivel screen is nice for reaching over a crowd. Those are the positives.
Problems: As a professional and with my last Sony F707, I expect my pictures to be in the 95%+ good department. With this Canon A95 I experience about 50% keepers right from the camera and maybe 60% after photoshop. The focus is very slow and many images are blurred. Shot to shot is extremely slow missing many opportunities. Turn the command dial or turn off the camera, all your settings dissapear. The display is black at night and impossible to see. useless for night shots if you can't see what you are shooting. The 4 way dial is easy to bump and constantly changing modes. I actually prefer our old Olympus 1.3mp to this camera. This was our first and last Canon. Overall oppinion: extremely disatissfied.
Opinion: The A95 is too slow to recover when taking photos. Of the other three digital cameras I've had, this is my least favorite.
I have had MANY blurry photos, mis-focused images and generally poor quality pictures. I am scared to count on this camera to take important pictures, but am stuck with it for now.
Opinion: This was my first Digital camera. And what a good choice it was! This little camera did a superb job for what it was designed for. I loved the rotating display. I particularly liked to use this camera for night shots, on a tripod of course... and i would get some very nice images. Knowing how to use the camera to its full potential is key. The Quality of the camera was excellent, as well as the pictures it produced.
Problems: None!
Opinion: My first foray into Canon... and a faulty camera as well...
I was lucky enough to win this camera in a competition. As I am a seasoned Nikon user my initial thoughts were to sell the camera on but I didn't. I thought I would give it a try first....
In a way I am glad I had. Although my camera was faulty and was (very) lucky enough to get it replaced by a A610 overall I think the A95 is a good piece of kit.
The build quality is fantastic - at a guess 95% metal. As a person with large hands I find it holds very well and steady when taking pictures. The amount of features the camera has is amazing. You are really getting DSLR features with this camera - Shutter priority, Aperture priority etc.
Picture quality is good and if it was not for a focus problem (see below) and awful purple-fringing would have been excellent. I've tried a lot of (Nikon) digital cameras but I've never seen PF as bad as this - a real shame.
Problems: Three problems I had let this camera down in my opinion. Two where due to a faulty camera.
First problem with due to focus issues. Most of the left-hand side of the picture always came out blurred when the camera was set to large apertures. I've never seen this kind of fault on any other camera. A friend has a Canon A70 and she just does not have problems of this kind.
Second problem was that after a while the screen decided to take a rest and go totally white for some unknown reason. Switching the camera off then on corrected this problem - for a while.
Third problem is general and it what other people have encountered. The Compactflash door is just too flimsly. This is a shame because the vast majority of the camera is extremely well built. You would have thought Canon would extend this to the Compactflash door but no.
You could obviously overcome this problem by buying a large-capacity CF card and connecting the camera to the computer every time you need to transfer pictures. Not the ideal solution though.
Obviously because of Problems 1 and 2 I managed to return the camera. The company I won it from were very good about it and managed to replace it with a A610 for which I was very, very grateful for.
The A610 is fantastic in all regards - much better than the A95.
Opinion: For its price its certainly a good camera. I have had this camera for 6 months plus. The camera is a good trainer for some one who wants to learn photography but does not want to shell out a ton of money.
Not a good camera for point and shoot types. It takes a while to get used to it.
Its got lots of settings and features for its price. believe me I am discovering new uses every day!
Pros -
Good value for money.
Great for learning photography.
Image quality is impressive.
Good battery life.
Stable in the hand.
Great Swivel LCD display.
Great for bright light photography.
Cons -
Build Quality - Battery door and CF card doors need some strenghtening for rough use.
Speed - kind of slow in focusing
Controls are not very egronomic.
High ISO noise is evident. Not good for low light photography. Needs a tripod.
Can be tempermental at times.
Cant save settings on exit in M mode.
Kind of outdated by now. (Being my first camera kind of attachted to it ;-) )
Movie is in 3 min clips.
some purple fringe
Problems: Well I wish Canon could do some thing about the build quality for this range of cameras.
Opinion: I had this camera for 2 months but shot quite a it things with it already. I would reocmmend it to someone who looks for a cheap but also a nice camera.
Pros:
1) good resolution
2) easy to shoot
3) good camera for the price
4) good battery life
5) I love the FLIP screen, will never buy a camera without one. Now, I cannot imagine how i lived without one before.
Cons:
1) does not focus that quickly. Sometime want it to be more speedy.
2) it switches to panorama mode for no reason when trying to focus.
3)wish there was internal memory when no memory stick available
4) i wish it saved the cutoms setting when switch shooting modes and when changing batteries
5) video is limited to 30sec, good resolution though but only 16fps
Problems: it switches to panorama mode for no reason when trying to focus.
