Opinion: In 2005 I replaced my Canon S10 with the A80, shot many thousands of photos. And this little thing really rocks. In 2006 I bought a Panasonic FZ30 and in 2011 I bought a Panasonic-G3 Micro Four Thirds, My wife has a Panasonic TZ7. All really good Cameras with a lot of Features the A80 never had. But wenn you lock at the pictures of the A80... Man, so beautiful colors. None of the new ones reaches that fine colors of the A80.
Today I took her to a photo shooting at Hamburg Harbour. She's old, has several defects (dropped it several times, sellf repaired with canon parts, Zoom isn't workin properly, sensorreadout problems, the E81 Error sometimes occours....) I only got 4 ok pictures out of her, but these four are really fantastic :-)

Very, very good, little camera. If Canon would now build new A80's, I would get one, for sure ;-)

Regards

Opinion: The camera served me for many years, traveled around the world, seen humidity, cold, and hot weather, never let me down, not even once.
It's solid body saved it many times when it had slipped off my hands, and fallen to the ground. The CF card is very reliable and much more faster than an SD in my opinion. I have never used the drivers and Canon provided software to download the pictures, instead just inserted the CF card into my Mac and copied the pictures, much faster. 4x AA batteries are definitely not the best feature of this camera, but if you have a spare set in your pocket you are good to go. This camera showed stunning picture quality, for a 4.0 mega pixel camera, and sometimes out-performed 10 mega pixel cameras in it's rapidity, simplicity, quality, and programmable options, which make another point I would like to point out. The full manual control [P] mode, makes this camera an amazing tool. You can pre-program it to take specific type of pictures and use [Auto] meanwhile. A definite five out of five to this camera.

Problems: About six months ago, the LCD screen started having some problems, it was showing bright purple colours instead of the image, but when you reset the LCD screen it would start working. Now fifty percent of the time, this LCD glitch affects the photos taken: the sky is purple, trees are pink. Even though I am experiencing this technical issue, I keep on using the camera on almost a daily basis to take beautiful shots.

Opinion: This is an excellent camera. But for me personally, it occupies a middle-ground that
I am not that interested in.

The picture quality is great in my opinion and I have never wanted for a particular
feature. I like the aperture and shutter priority modes.

The problem for me is that I would rather have a really small camera that is better
for carrying in my pocket to take with me everywhere and a DSLR camera for
serious outings. This camera is too big and too slow to be very versatile for use on
a night out on the town, yet not good enough to replace a DSLR.

I plan to sell this one and purchase a more compact camera for day-to-day use. One
day when I get the funds, I plan to buy an SLR camera for more serious use.

Problems: It is very slow, especially at night. At night, it seems like it can take up to 4 seconds or
so to take a picture. This is very annoying for me, but it is even worse when I ask a
bystander to take my picture. I always have to explain that you have to hold the
button forever.

Opinion: after owning one of these shortly after they hit the market and then selling it and up gradeing to the newer A series I have went back to the A80 as the others were not the same in quality of the pics that this produced. A85, A95 and so on. This camera A80 along with its little brother the A70 are one of the better cameras in this catigorie. A++++++++ to canon, I love the A80 and will never give it up as long as it keeps on produceing quality photos.

Problems: None what so ever.

Opinion: I bought mine back in april 2004 and have taken 1000's of photos with it since. It has accompanied me to France, Ireland, England, Spain, Italy, Indonesia, Hong Kong and it has never failed to perform. I now have a 30D and use the A80 a lot less, but for 2 years I learned the art of digital photography with the A80. Aperture priority, shutter priority, full manual and the movie modes are the features I used the most. The flip out screen & manual functions are great for low light shots inside Italian churches - without straining your neck! And you don't even need to use the flash if you can find a nearby marble pillar & the self timer!

But I've moved on...I hardly use it anymore except for situations where I do not need to shoot RAW or where I do not want to lug around my DSLR.

Perfect for a beginner>amateur starting digital photography. This camera allows you to understand and grow your knowledge as opposed to the new generation of super-compact-super-zoom-7MP-fully-automatic-idiot-proof point & shoots available. The design is looking dated but it's the results that count...right ?

Problems: No problems - solid, robust, reliable. Perhaps a little large compared to some of the point & shoots available today. 4MP's is still ample for family shots. Battery life is better than the later A95 because the screen is smaller. I prefer to shoot more photos rather than waste battery power on reviewing shots on a larger screen. Never had any problems with the CF door that other reviewers have complained about. It's a digital camera - not a barn door !

Thanks for reading

Opinion: Great until E18 Error brought it to a screaming halt for no apparent reason

Problems: E18 lens error. I now understand that this is fairly common for this camera. I really loved the features this camera provided and image quality. I hope Canon has done something about this lens probllem as I just purchased an A620 to replace it. I wish Canon would ditch the movie mode, and put more money in the construction of the lens. The articulating LCD is a major bonus in my line of work.

Opinion: Excellent P/S camera. We've used this model for about a year without problems. We've had good luck with all modes of illumination (daylight, low light, flash). The color balance is good; I rarely have to touch up anything other than an occasional brightness adjustment. Movie mode is fine too. The camera is durable...handles rough storage in a fanny pack for days at a time without problem. Good battery life.

Problems: The long shutter delay is frustrating, but that's universal at this price point.

Opinion: Excelente equipamento, ótima empunhadura, grande autonomia de energia é realmente muito fácil de usar.
A tela escamoteável facilita fotos com obstáculos.

Problems: O visor poderia ser um pouco maior.

Opinion: After having the camera a year I had a chance to REALLY use it on a 5-week trip through Myanmar, Cambodia (Angkor Wat) and Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket).

The flip-out LCD was a great for ground, waist-level and over-the-head shots. This flexibility well outweighed the small screen size.

I'd often relied on flash illumination in the past. With the various lighting options (tungstein, fluorescent) I was very pleased with the aviailable light photos I shot.

My only minor complaint was not able to 'lock' the camera control knob atop the camera. All in all I'm really pleased with the construction and performance of my A80.
