Minor update to the A710 IS offers a strong feature set (including stabilized 6x zoom) and good degree of user control at a competitive price. It isn't the smallest or most powerful camera in the World, (or even in the Canon range), but it's a great starting point for someone wanting to learn more about photography without breaking the bank. Image quality is suprisingly good and despite the rather cheap construction it's responsive and reliable.

Opinion: It's a great small lightweight camera, the results are actually quite good, don't except wonders from it (or from any camera), but with all the setting you ever need you'll be able to take some very good pictures with it. Concidering the price you get an excellent photographic tool.
See my review, if it's still there :-)

Problems: Blown out highlights in some cases (can mostly be improved with custom settings).
Flash recycle time is quite slow, for me it's no problem, because I hardly use the flash anyway, but if you do a lot of family shots indoors, it could become annoying.
Opinion: I was very unhappy with the picture quality so exchanged it for A630. If image quality is important I would look at another camera.
Problems: Image quality not sharp and clear.
Opinion: Nice budget compact with manual controls. The corners cut to get it to this price point are its poor low light capability & the back screen (which is hard to see in bright light). It all seems like a reasonable set of compromises to me.
Opinion: Having recently bought a powershot A710IS and an A 720IS I was able to
compare them both to an older A520.
Same objects, same room same time.
The A 520 made visibly sharper clearer pictures than both the newer and
ostensibly higher megapixel models.
I showed the pictures to friends on TV screen and all picked the A520 as better.
Mind you we are all just PandS people but for us after this experience the
Megapixel debate is just nonsense when a 4 mp gives better results than 7 and
8 mp cameras there must be other factors more important to making quality
images.
